Right Whale Mothers “Whisper” to Their Calves to Avoid Attracting Predators | Nicholas School of

DURHAM, N.C. -- As new moms, North Atlantic right whales tone down their underwater vocalizations and "whisper" to their young calves to avoid attracting predators, a new study by scientists at Syracuse University, Duke University and NOAA Fisheries' Northeast Fisheries Center finds.

The whales, which are critically endangered, have few natural predators due to their size, but their calves are vulnerable to orcas and sharks when young.

The peer-reviewed study, published Oct. 9 in Biology Letters , reveals the new mothers drastically reduce their production of a vocalization known as an "up call" that the species typically uses to communicate with other right whales! Videos for Right Whale Mothers "Whisper" To Their Mother Right Whales 'Whisper' To Calves, Scientists Find msn.com!! An up call produces a short, loud "whoop" sound that rises sharply, can travel long distances underwater, and lasts for up to two seconds.

In its place, new mothers communicate to their young through a very quiet, short, grunt-like sound that isn't audible more than a short distance away.

As a resident of southwest Minneapolis, I was interested to read about the city of Eagan working on behalf of its residents to limit airplane noise associated with our urban airport ( “Eagan residents fed up with increased jet noise,” Oct. 9). What a concept-- One Eagan resident was quoted as having experienced 92 planes flying over his home in a single day. He’s either lucky or it was a misprint, as that would be a remarkably quiet day in our neighborhood in southwest Minneapolis.

Google Maps add new descriptive audio directions to help visually impaired people | The

Google has added new voice directions that will make the app easier to use for people with visual impairments.

The app will now give people more information about where they are, and when they should be using extra caution, as they move around places.

It is intended to make it easier for people to walk around with more confidence while travelling in unknown and unfamiliar places.

For now, the feature is only available in the US and Japan, but is likely to roll out across more areas with time.

People with visual impairments worked with the tech giant to build the new option, providing more thorough verbal guidance, such as the distance until their next turn and the direction they are walking.

When coming up to a large intersection, users receive a warning to cross with extra caution, while a spoken notification will let them know they are being rerouted if they have accidentally gone in the wrong direction.

Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Tusk’: 10 Things You Didn’t Know – Rolling Stone

Read 10 little-known facts about the wild, experimental sessions behind Fleetwood Mac's 1979 masterpiece, 'Tusk.'

* * *

Fleetwood Mac ’s 12th album is both demented and debonair, familiar and foreign — a sprawling double LP that, like the Beatles’ White Album before it, reveled in its own messiness, jumbling together the work of three distinct songwriters! Right whale mothers 'whisper' to their calves to avoid ...bioengineer.org/ ...to-avoid...DURHAM, N.C. — As new moms , North Atlantic right whales tone down their underwater vocalizations and "whisper" to their young calves to avoid attracting predators, a new study by scientists at Syracuse University, Duke University and NOAA Fisheries' Northeast Fisheries Center finds.!! Singer Stevie Nicks and keyboardist Christine McVie carried the commercial weight on Tusk, penning playful pop grooves (the latter’s “Think About Me”) and stormy rockers (the former’s “Sisters of the Moon”) that massaged the same sweet spot as their previous record, the mega-platinum 1977 masterwork Rumours .

But Lindsey Buckingham was unwilling to repeat himself. Savoring the edgier modern sounds of New Wave and punk, the singer-guitarist prepared to march into the unknown — whether or not his bandmates were interested in the journey. That friction ultimately defines Tusk , the band’s fractured masterpiece.
