MDI, Orono, Camden Hills girls win North regional titles — High School
BELFAST, Maine — The Mount Desert Island girls cross country team took home the Class B North championship plaque a year ago , only to return it a few days later after a scoring error was discovered and the Trojans lost the title in a tiebreaker.
On Saturday MDI left no doubt behind as it won the regional championship plaque on the 3.1-mile course at the Troy Howard Middle School.
The Trojans placed their five scoring runners among the top 10 finishers to total 37 points and score a wide victory over runner-up Medomak Valley of Waldoboro (107).
"It was just a glitch," coach Desiree Sirois said of last year's scoring correction that ultimately enabled Ellsworth to edge MDI for the North title by the sixth-runner tiebreaker. "We just continued to work hard, do our best and focus on us and it was our moment this year."
Hudson girls cross country wins Division 4 regional - Sports - Ionia Sentinel - Standard-Ionia,
HUDSON — Entering Saturday's Division 4 cross country regional at Hudson, the Tigers girls squad went in expecting a battle to get the third and final automatic team qualifying spot for next weekend's state competition.
Hudson's girls team did more than that, as the Tigers, led by three runners finishing inside the top-15, won their home regional with a score of 65 points, hanging on against two teams right on their heels.
“The goal was to just put four right in the top 20, and that's what we went in trying to do,” said Hudson coach Trina Romanowski. “We've been working really hard, and to be honest, I wasn't even counting spots, so when we found out we were regional champs, it was a great surprise! A week after edging out West Plains by a single point in the Ozark Conference championship, Kickapoo captured a Class 4 District 5 title by the same margin.
Despite the pair of wins over the Zizzers, Kickapoo head coach Jeremy Goddard was quick to downplay the notion of a rivalry between the two schools.
"In 40 years of coaching, there’s only been about four years [West Plains] hasn't brought home a trophy," Goddard said. "To be a rivalry, we have to win every now and then, and we don't beat them very often! So, to say we have a rivalry with them isn’t necessarily being fair to them. They are our goal and, if you even get close to them, you’re going to be where you want to be at the end. To have the chance to step in and beat them one time or two is pretty good."
