New technology being tested in Memphis to battle potholes

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - As pothole season approaches, new technology is being tested right here in the Bluff City that could help get those problematic holes fixed faster.

City leaders say the program is still in its early stages, but the goal is to help "digitize the city" by using advanced technology to address potholes proactively.

"When I come across a pothole, they're not safe at all. They're real bumpy and I just think they need to be fixed," said Jason Woods, Memphian.

WMC talked to other Memphians who say they want something to be done about the potholes in Memphis.

Earlier this year, Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland announced the city would be testing out new technology to tackle potholes.

Video will be captured and processed using existing MATA bus cameras and will automatically determine where potholes and litter are located within the city.

RVC announces plans for new Advanced Technology Center

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) ----- "Now, what you're starting to see is the physical or the outward reflection of that work."

The ATC will enhance students' middle skills, like logistics and critical core manufacturing, giving them a boost in the job search. Rockford City Administrator Todd Cagnoni says this center will push the community forward.

"We could identify the educational needs, not only for our existing residents, but what are the workforce needs from our private businesses, so this is a critical component that certainly the Mayor and Rock Valley College and others have been leading on," said Cagnoni.

"It's exciting, it's a proud moment for the college, it's a proud moment for our community. There's so much positive that you're hearing people talking about the economy, but we need to make sure that the talent that we develop stays in this community, that's an investment into our future," said Jensen.

Multi-Center Owner Says Recession-Resistant Business Model, Advanced Technology, and Management

October 16, 2019 // Franchising.com // CHARLOTTE - Experienced franchise investors have several factors they consider when evaluating a potential new business. For Sam Sa, who owns four Meineke Car Care Centers in New Jersey and previously worked with a restaurant franchise, those were return on investment, operational efficiency, economic resiliency and an eye toward technology and innovation.

“I've looked at a lot of franchise businesses as part of my due diligence, and I liked what I saw with Meineke,” said Sa, 32. “If you are a forward-thinking, new generation automotive repair shop that treats it as a retail business, you will appeal to a newer customer base, and there's a very, very good chance that you're going to outperform your competitors.”

“I've been a Meineke franchisee for about a year,” said Sa. “So far, our sales have been up tremendously. In 2018, sales were up 30 percent. This year, sales are up 40 percent. A lot of that success comes from simply following the Meineke playbook. I think anytime a business you invest in is up 40 percent, I would call that pretty good results. I think there's a lot more potential in what we can accomplish and what we can achieve, but so far, the investment opportunity has proven to be above our expectations.”

Winnebago invests big in electric technology: Are greener RVs coming? - Curbed

Although years behind the auto industry, the RV industry is finally making making strides in efficiency and green technology. In the latest eco-friendly news, Winnebago Industries has announced that they will help fund the expansion of Motiv Power Systems, a provider of all electric commercial chassis. Love campers and trailers? Come join our community group .

Motiv Power Systems has secured $60 million in equity funding with a series B round of investment led by Winnebago and GMAG Holdings Corp. As the first minority investment that Winnebago has made in over 60 years of operation, the funds will support the growth of Motiv, aid in the opening of a new engineering and manufacturing facility in Detroit, Michigan, and facilitate further growth in the company's large-fleet customer segment.

The RV industry has been slow to adopt electric technology, and the innovations that have occurred are stemming from Europe. In recent years we've seen a few eco-friendly concept RVs, like an RV covered in solar panels or a travel trailer that can be towed by an electric car. Most recently, a German company debuted the world's first manufactured electric camper with a decent range of 249 miles. In the U.S., however, the closest thing to an electric camper is the yet to be produced Rivian truck that features a kitchen and tent for overland camping.
