The US Navy has confirmed videos showing pilots confused by two mysterious flying objects over the US contained what it considers to be UFOs, after years of speculation since their release.
Joseph Gradisher, the Navy's spokesman for the deputy chief of naval operations for information warfare, confirmed that the Navy considered the objects in the videos to be unidentified.
"The Navy designates the objects contained in these videos as unidentified aerial phenomena," he said in a statement to The Black Vault , a civilian-run archive of government documents.

The term UFOs, which stands for "unidentified flying objects," is now used less frequently by officials, who have instead adopted the term "unidentified aerial phenomena," or UAP.
Neither the term UFO nor UAP means the unknown object is deemed extraterrestrial, and many such sightings end up having logical, and earthly, explanations.

UFO sightings: U.S. Navy drafts guidelines to report - The Washington Post
A recent uptick in sightings of unidentified flying objects — or as the military calls them, "unexplained aerial phenomena" — prompted the Navy to draft formal procedures for pilots to document encounters, a corrective measure that former officials say is long overdue.
As first reported by POLITICO , these intrusions have been happening on a regular basis since 2014. Recently, unidentified aircraft have entered military-designated airspace as often as multiple times per month, Joseph Gradisher, spokesman for office of the deputy chief of naval operations for information warfare, told The Washington Post on Wednesday.

He said, "We want to get to the bottom of this. We need to determine who's doing it, where it's coming from and what their intent is. We need to try to find ways to prevent it from happening again."

So much for Roswell, New Mexico, or the lonely Nevada desert. New Mexico came in 8th on the list; Nevada, 13th.
Meanwhile, the states with the fewest UFO sightings per capita — Texas, Louisiana, Georgia, Mississippi and Alabama -- are all down South.
The list was put together by the analysts and space nerds at internet provider SatelliteInternet.com , which culled data from the National UFO Reporting Center and the U.S. Census, to attract attention in time for World UFO Day on July 2. (Yep, there is such a day.)
Navy withholding data on UFO sightings, congressman says - POLITICO
A top Republican on the House Homeland Security Committee is accusing the Navy of withholding information about reports of unidentified aircraft after officially requesting more data on the mysterious encounters.

Navy Undersecretary Thomas Modly responded in a brief letter on July 31 that "the Department of the Navy takes these reports very seriously and continues to log sightings and fully investigate the accounts," according to a copy provided to POLITICO.
But Walker said he is discouraged by the Navy's seeming unwillingness to provide his committee with more data about the so-called unidentified aerial phenomena — the term the Pentagon prefers over the more traditional "unidentified flying objects," or UFOs. He has expressed concern publicly that the craft could pose a threat to U.S. forces or territory.
