NASA claims the decision to launch this second medium-sized suit had to do with the number of spacewalks coming up and which crew members will be available in the months ahead. "We don't do it for a specific crew member," Shireman said during a press conference on Friday. "Actually, what we do is we look over the next two years, and look at all the crew members who are [spacewalk] certified, and say, 'Okay, what's the sweet spot?'" A decision to extend the duration of the Crew Dragon test flight with Behnken and Hurley, designated Demo-2, is one of several options under consideration to ensure the space station remains staffed with U.S. astronauts after NASA’s agreement to procure seats on Russia’s Soyuz spacecraft expires next year.
In an interview with CNN last week, NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said the agency is also looking at purchasing more Soyuz seats from Roscosmos, the Russian space agency.

SpaceX has never flown a person into space in its Crew Dragon, its first crew-capable spacecraft. But already the company is showing off its much bigger, much shinier cousin: the Starship, built in Boca Chica, a coastal village at the southeastern tip of Texas, as part of a plan to carry giant crews into deep space. And NASA's administrator is bristling.
That's because, even though the Crew Dragon — which consists of a capsule for carrying cargo and crew into space on top of a Falcon 9 rocket — is still very much in the works, it's well behind schedule. The animation, called the CGI moon kit, is composed of data from NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO). The agency released it online to make data more accessible to 3D artists, according to a statement from NASA.
"[The moon kit] will bring the LRO data within reach of lots of other artists who want to do the kinds of things that I do," Ernie Wright, creator of the CGI moon kit and a science visualizer at the Scientific Visualization Studio at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center , said in the statement .

Wright used 3D animation software to create the CGI moon kit, which was originally intended to be a resource for NASA's Scientific Visualization Studio. However, after receiving several requests, Wright decided to make his visualizations available to the public, allowing others to connect with the LRO mission.
