WASHINGTON — At NASA headquarters on Tuesday, officials introduced two prototype spacesuits to be used during upcoming moon missions.
The new spacesuits will offer improvements over existing models for the men and women expected to wear them, including greater comfort and movement! And as NASA races to meet the Trump administration's 2024 target for returning to the moon, the agency needs to make that astronauts have the technological capability to safely set foot on the surface, which no human has done since 1972.
"We've been working for a long time to build spacesuits that will do the job on the moon and going on to Mars," said Amy Ross, a spacesuit engineer at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston.
One spacesuit, with a colorful bright red, white and blue pattern, is called the exploration extravehicular mobility unit. That is what astronauts will wear as they explore the moon's surface.
NASA's Mars InSight is unstuck and officially back to work
It was looking grim for NASA's Mars InSight mission back at the beginning of October. But now, things seem to have turned around.
The InSight lander had originally been sent to the Red Planet with the goal of drilling some 16 feet into the Martian terrain, to measure heat beneath the surface! The program was originally intended to create a family of experimental aircraft not intended for production beyond the limited number of each design built solely for flight research. The first X-Plane, the Bell X-1, was the first rocket-powered airplane to break the sound barrier on October 14, 1947.!! But after only 14 inches of progress, there was a problem : the "mole" (aka drill with a built-in heat probe) would go no further.
It got stuck in Feb. 2019 and remained that way until early October, when NASA came up with a new plan. The idea was to use the InSight lander's metal scoop to refill the 14-inch hole and then act as a support for the mole to press up against as it tunneled down.
The whole scheme was based on an assumption that the below-ground hold-up was heavily clumped together soil, rather than rock. The scoop, then, would help guide the mole along by stopping it from bouncing around as it dug deeper. The pressure would be forced downward instead, which NASA hoped would break through the tough stretch of soil.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. — NASA has yet to set a launch date for the first test flight of its long-delayed Space Launch System (SLS) megarocket, which the agency plans to use to send astronauts to the lunar surface in 2024. And it looks like more delays could be right around the corner.
Although NASA said this summer that its new rocket should finally lift off by the end of 2020 , the first mission may slip to the middle of 2021, Ken Bowersox, NASA's acting associate administrator for human exploration and operations, said in a presentation here at the International Symposium for Personal and Commercial Spaceflight (ISPCS) on Oct. 10.
That mission, known as Artemis 1, will send an uncrewed Orion spacecraft on a trip around the moon. Following that initial test flight, NASA aims to launch Artemis 2 — the first human mission of NASA's Artemis program — in 2022. That mission will fly astronauts on a loop around the moon, but they won't land there just yet.

When NASA sends humans to the moon for the first time in more than half a century, one lucky astronaut will go down in history for becoming the first woman on the moon. Then it won't be long before we see the first woman on Mars, and she just might beat the first man there, according to NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine.
"We could very well see the first person on Mars be a woman," Bridenstine told reporters on Friday (Oct. 18) during a news conference about the first all-woman spacewalk . "I think that could very well be a milestone," he added.
NASA currently has no concrete plans for landing humans on Mars — the moon is the agency's first priority — but Bridenstine has said that the first crewed Mars landing could happen sometime in the 2030s . Meanwhile, the private spaceflight company SpaceX is working on its Starship Mars-colonizing rocket, which could help NASA send those astronaut pioneers to the Red Planet.
