Morgan Stanley reported a higher-than-expected profit on Thursday, bolstered by strength in bond trading and M&A advisory, but executives were careful not to sound too optimistic about the rest of the year.
Like other big banks, Morgan Stanley had to navigate falling interest rates, volatile markets and recession signals during the third quarter, and fared relatively well. Its overall profit rose 3 per cent, topping Wall Street expectations by a healthy margin.
However, the factors that created such a difficult operating environment during the quarter have not gone away, chief executive James Gorman and chief financial officer Jonathan Pruzan said on a call to discuss earnings.

The Rosewood Hotel Georgia in Downtown Vancouver is the latest to win the right to block striking workers from using sirens, loud drums and noisemakers at the picket line.

The Golden Ray cargo ship was carrying more than 4,000 new cars when it capsized off the coast of Georgia last month. The crew survived, but the 656-foot ship is still there, lying half-submerged at about 90 degrees, on its side.

Despite lots of effort, it's been leaking an unknown amount of fuel and oil, which has local environmental advocates and commercial fishermen concerned. Oil has been found in sheens in the water, in bits on some beaches and in the marsh itself, indicated by black stains on the spartina grass.
Crews in yellow protective suits have been working 12 hours a day trying to mitigate the effects of the oil, setting up thousands of feet of containment boom, spraying sphagnum moss, a peat absorbent on the grass to keep it from sticking to other surfaces and animals, and removing already dead, oiled marsh grass.

'Venom 2' Is Starting to Sound a Lot Like 'Maximum Carnage'
Venom 2 is due in theaters in less than a year, and the film is still adding characters. Deadline says Carnage is the "presumptive primary villain" because of his appearance in the post-credits scene from the first Venom (where he was played by a red-haired Woody Harrelson), and now they say that Sony is looking for an actress to cast alongside Carnage as Shriek, who was a mainstay of Spider-Man and Venom comics throughout the 1990s, basically as Carnage's sidekick and partner in crime.
Both characters were featured prominently in the epic Maximum Carnage series that crossed over between all four monthly '90s Spider-Man comics and became one of the decade's signature storylines. So if you have Venom and Carnage and Shriek, you have a movie that is really starting to sound like an adaptation of Maximum Carnage (minus Spidey himself, of course).
