Carrie Underwood, Dick’s Sporting Goods donate $100K to girls sports programs | TribLIVE.com

Burrell High School’s 2019 homecoming queen skipped Saturday’s school dance to go to country star Carrie Underwood’s concert in Pittsburgh.

Homecoming queen Sara Novak said she and classmate Hannah Koziarski, both student-athletes, were told by district officials that they would be able to pick out an outfit from Underwood’s CALIA line sold by Findlay-based Dick’s Sporting Goods and get a workout with Underwood’s personal trainer before the concert.

What they and eight students from four other Western Pennsylvania districts didn’t know was that they’d also get to meet Underwood, and the country star would present $20,000 checks to each of their districts to benefit girls athletics.

“It was kind of weird missing (the homecoming dance) being homecoming queen, but I don’t really regret not going,” said Novak, 18, of Lower Burrell.

WESTFIELD — Earlier this season, the Westfield/Brocton Lady Wolverines beat the Maple Grove Red Dragons on their home turf.

On Thursday, the Red Dragons got their revenge as they took down the Lady Wolverines, 2-0, in the final Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Central regular-season girls soccer game of the year at North Lake.

With the wind in their favor, the Red Dragons pounced on the Lady Wolverines early. In the second minute, an opportunity for Maple Grove that would normally be just a routine play for Angel Busch in net saw the ball take an extra spin as the heavy wind aided the ball’s journey to the back of the net and gave Maple Grove an early 1-0 lead. The goal was scored by Taylor Bower and the assist was courtesy of Ana Pavlock.
