How I Learned About My Terrible Internet Data Cap, Thanks to Video Games - VICE

All of that could go away, of course... if I paid only another $50 per month for unlimited data.

* * *

Games are not getting smaller. Patches are now the sizes of previously "big" games. More games are adopting service models, meaning they're updated and changed every week, if not every day. Buying physical copies doesn't change that fact. All these changes are funneled through an increasingly narrow pipe owned by regional monopolies, each of whom are looking at the all digital, all streaming future like the Jack Nicholson nodding yes GIF .

When I realized what was going on, I went over the edge for a hot minute. I installed ways to monitor traffic on different devices, switched off automatic updates on whatever hardware let me, and even turned the video quality of the camera watching my kid sleep at night to "low." Still, overnight, my Internet somehow ate up more than 20GB. How? Why? Turns out, I'd forgotten to turn off the PlayStation 4, so it pulled all those Destiny 2: Shadowkeep updates! The amazing video game marathon that raises millions of ...www.businessinsider.com ...Awesome Games Done Quick mobilizes a unique community that is also crazy entertaining to help raise millions for great causes. No matter how the gaming actually goes, everybody winds up a winner.!! I started doing the math on daily data habits, and quickly realized I'd be well over my cap.

Universities offer degrees in professional video gaming - SFGate

LONDON — On their first week in class, a group of students is playing a first-person shooter video game in a sleek new digital studio. It’s their introduction to the degree in esports they’ve all enrolled in.

Ryan Chapman, 18, said his parents were “skeptical at first” about studying esports, or competitive multiplayer video gaming.

“But now they understand how big the industry is growing, the pace it’s growing at. They’re now really all for it because it’s a great industry to start to get into,” said Chapman, who was among the students in the lab playing “Counter-Strike,” one of the most popular esports games.

The University of Staffordshire last year started its bachelor’s and master’s esports programs, in which students mainly learn marketing and management skills tailored to the industry. This autumn, it’s expanding the program to London while other schools are also offering esports degree courses, including Britain’s Chichester University, Virginia’s Shenandoah University, Becker College in Massachusetts and Ohio State University. In Asia, where esports has seen strong growth, schools in Singapore and China offer courses.

New Video Games Out This Week: Concrete Genie, John Wick Hex, and More

The first week of October is down, and now things are going to start coming hot and fast. This week -- beyond a new release from Sony Interactive Entertainment -- there's not many marquee releases, but what there is are a ton of promising smaller games hitting PS4, Xbox One , PC , and Nintendo Switch . From graffiti simulators to racing games to titles that star John Wick, this week should provide a little somethin' for everybody. And on top of this, there's a few notable ports dropping this week as well.

That said, here are the noteworthy releases coming this week that are worth, at the very least, taking a quick gander at. As always, it's important to remember that this isn't an exhaustive list of releases. Nobody has time for that. Rather, this is a curated list that features the most salient new releases and noteable ports. Further, while expansion, remasters, and remakes are included, games releasing into Early Access are not.

Quite a lot has been going on:

10 Anime Video Games Out Right Now That Are Actually Awesome

There's a general consensus within the anime community that anime games are pretty mediocre. While every game has it's downfalls, many believe that anime games are just poorly-produced cash grabs that don't deserve a second playthrough. Almost a year after its initial release, Jump Force players are now pondering whether or not the game can ever be saved, despite the DLC possibilities for this game. Despite upcoming releases like Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot and Tales of Arise that do seem promising, anime fans and gamers alike remain skeptical. We could go down a list of bad anime games all day, but in hopes that these next string of releases will be something to remember, here are 10 great video games out right now that are based on existing anime series, inspired anime series of their own, or borrowed some of anime's most famous conventions.

Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 gives players the option of creating their own Saiyan, Human, Majin, Namekian, or Frieza race character, complete with transformations for them all. It also lets players customize their character's skin color, height, and hairstyle, and gives them the option of equipping their warrior with techniques across the entire Dragon Ball franchise . Xenoverse 2 features an original Dragon Ball story, and gives players the opportunity to put their skills to the test in exciting online battles (despite the many issues with online play). There's enough in this game to keep new players busy for several months, and the difficulty in collecting every playable Dragon Ball character and technique easily makes it a completionist's dream.

When "easy mode" isn't enough: An analysis of unclear lessons in video games | Ars Technica

Those nine games were chosen due to their "diverse set of genres and gameplay mechanics, and, well, I liked them," Razbuten said. The host made clear that no guidance would be given to the player. (This was followed by a joke about the couple's marriage ending, along with a quickly stated asterisk of "That's not true.")

While we've seen essays and thinkpieces about the obfuscating "language" of video games and how that can be a barrier for those who didn't grow up with the hobby, Razbuten's video shines because it collects and presents clear video proof of his concerns. It starts with SMB 's Level 1-1, often cited as a masterstroke in game design to teach players how to do things like jump, run, face enemies, and collect a power-up. Razbuten's video points to the lack of clear "running" instructions inherent in the act of play, however, while he also examines one way that players could organically misunderstand how the iconic Super Mushroom moves around.
