Here’s why this is the decade of superstar astronaut movie roles - The Verge

His Ocean's Eleven ringleader George Clooney already went to space on film in Gravity and Solaris , and their co-star Matt Damon did in The Martian . Tom Hanks, Bruce Willis, Sandra Bullock, Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattison, Juliette Binoche, and Ryan Gosling have all gone into some form of make-believe orbit, too. Now, a few weeks after Pitt charted a course for Neptune in Ad Astra , Natalie Portman is playing a more earthbound (but still active) NASA star in Lucy in the Sky .

That's a lot of movie stars in the stars, and most of them have made the journey fairly recently. Hanks and Willis did their astronaut movies in the 1990s, but most of the others blasted off in the past five years or so. Though the Moon landing recently celebrated its 50th anniversary, movie astronauts were mostly featured in science fiction, horror, and / or shlock for much of the 1970s and 1980s, give or take the occasional Right Stuff . There were a few classic space-set movies and characters, but astronaut wasn't a go-to role like cop, crook, or lawyer. (Most telling is the list of big-name actors from this period who never went to fictional space: Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Robert Redford, Burt Reynolds, Barbra Streisand, Sylvester Stallone, and so forth.

Before HBO's Watchmen, stream V for Vendetta, the best Alan Moore adaptation - The Verge

V for Vendetta , the 2006 movie adaptation of the politically charged graphic novel by writer Alan Moore and artist David Lloyd. Set in a dystopian future England, the film stars Natalie Portman as idealistic young woman Evey Hammond, who becomes a protégée of "V," an anarchist revolutionary (Hugo Weaving) in a Guy Fawkes mask. The original comic book series debuted in the UK in the early 1980s, as a furious reaction to the authoritarian bent of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher — and in particular, the nation's rising intolerance toward its ethnic minorities and LGBTQ citizens! When the collected edition of V for Vendetta was published at the end of the decade, it connected with the same adventurous adult-fantasy fans who'd devoured Moore's previous deconstructions of pulp adventure, in his comics series Swamp Thing , Miracleman, and Watchmen .

This premise is just a jumping-off point for Lindelof, who's best known for the similarly ambitious TV fantasy/dramas Lost and The Leftovers . In both those series, the larger narratives were broken up into character-driven episodes that tell their own discrete stories! Lindelof's technique is fairly true to the structure of Moore and Gibbons' book, which also gives each issue of the comic its own satisfying arc. Watchmen 's nine-episode first season jumps around in time and location, revealing its bigger picture via fascinating individual fragments that gradually come together.

'Ad Astra' Review: Brad Pitt Goes Interplanetary in a Stunning Space Epic | Space

It's safe to say that " Ad Astra " is probably not the science fiction film you think it is. Anyone expecting "Independence Day" or some such holiday blockbuster might be disappointed, but any fan of art expressed through cinema, won’t be.

The movie stars Brad Pitt as Major Roy McBride : super cool under pressure, pride of Space Command and son of legendary astronaut H. Clifford McBride, played by Tommy Lee Jones.

Clifford McBride was the first human to reach both Jupiter and Saturn and a veteran of several deep space missions, which made him the perfect candidate to lead the Lima Project — a deep, deep space mission that would put a team in orbit around Neptune, beyond the influence of the Sun's radiation, to scan the universe for extraterrestrial intelligence.

Not to give too much away, but there are *some* planets shown in the film. And they will leave you awestruck. This isn't the first time that realistic planets have been featured in a sci-fi film, but the way they pop off the screen in "Ad Astra" is certainly unique.

One reason why the cosmic visuals in "Ad Astra" are so stunningly realistic is that, particularly for the moon and Mars, the movie incorporates real NASA imagery and footage of space.

The first glimpse you get of a planet in "Ad Astra" is Earth. McBride is seen working on the "International Space Antenna," a massive structure that stretches from Earth's surface into the upper atmosphere. Climbing out onto a ladder-like limb of the structure to do some maintenance work, McBride looks down and sees the Earth below. The view is so realistic that it borders on dizzying.

Support the Girls
(Bulldog Films, 15)
A wonderfully weathered performance by Regina Hall anchors Andrew Bujalski's observant, warmly communal comedy about the put-upon female staff of a Hooters-style "breastaurant".

Transit
(Curzon Artificial Eye, 15)
German auteur Christian Petzold takes a bold conceptual risk with this modern-dress adaptation of Anna Seghers's 1944 Holocaust novel, powerfully transposing its concerns of identity and impermanence to the current refugee crisis.

Toy Story 4
(Disney, U)
If you thought Toy Story 3 brought the story to a neat and meaningful close, rendering any further sequels superfluous, you'd be right. This is bright and cheery enough, and made a billion dollars worldwide, but that's the reason it exists.
