News media associations and journalism groups accuse the tech giants of jeopardizing the industry's economic survival by putting out news content on their platforms without paying for it * * *
The big tech companies
Stepping ahead of the criticism, Google's vice president of news Richard Gringas said the company has "worked for many years to be a collaborative and supportive technology and advertising partner to the news industry.
In a Capitol steeped in partisanship, inflamed by special counsel Robert Mueller's report and Democrats' intensifying probes of President Donald Trump, the House Judiciary Committee's investigation of tech market power stands out. Not only is it bipartisan, but it's also the first such review by Congress of a sector that for more than a decade has enjoyed haloed status and a light touch from federal regulators.

Why Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Google Need to Be Disrupted
The benefits of big tech have accrued for me on another level as well. In my investment portfolio, the appreciation of Amazon and Apple stock restored economic security to my household after being run over in the Great Recession. Finally, Amazon is now the largest recruiter of students from the brand-strategy and digital-marketing courses I teach at NYU Stern School of Business. These firms have been great partners, clients, investments, and recruiters. And the sum of two decades of experience with, and study of, these companies leads me to a singular conclusion: It’s time to break up big tech.

The probe will look into "whether and how market-leading online platforms have achieved market power and are engaging in practices that have reduced competition, stifled innovation, or otherwise harmed consumers," a Justice Department statement read
It did not refer to any specific companies, but the Justice Department said the review would consider concerns raised about "search, social media, and some retail services online
"Without the discipline of meaningful market-based competition, digital platforms may act in ways that are not responsive to consumer demands," said Assistant Attorney General Makan Delrahim, who is in charge of the department's antitrust division. "The department's antitrust review will explore these important issues."

Chrome is even sneakier on your phone. If you use Android, Chrome sends Google your location every time you conduct a search. (If you turn off location sharing it still sends your coordinates out, just with less accuracy.
Firefox isn't perfect — it still defaults searches to Google and permits some other tracking A decade ago, Chrome and Firefox were taking on Microsoft's lumbering giant Internet Explorer. The upstart Chrome solved real problems for consumers, making the Web safer and faster. Today it dominates more than half the market
Lately, however, many of us have realized that our privacy is also a major concern on the Web — and Chrome's interests no longer always seem aligned with our own.
Opinion | A Brief History of How Your Privacy Was Stolen - The New York Times
The bursting of the internet bubble in March 2000 set in motion forces that would alter the culture and priorities of Silicon Valley. The venture capital industry retreated, and in its place arose a new group of investors, known as angels, who typically invest their own personal fortunes in start-ups. Foremost among them was the so-called PayPal Mafia — led by Peter Thiel, Elon Musk and Reid Hoffman — who transformed Silicon Valley with two brilliant insights.
