Girls soccer team penalized for ‘equal pay’ shirts – Boston News, Weather,

(CNN) — When a girl’s high school varsity soccer team in Vermont played a game wearing matching shirts emblazoned with a bold message hidden under their jerseys, they fully expected to be heard.

With three minutes left in the match on Friday, Burlington High School Seahorses captain Helen Worden, 17, scored a goal, putting her team ahead of the South Burlington Wolves.

As fans erupted in celebration, the Seahorses excitedly ran toward the stands to bask in the glory.

The move resulted in all four players being penalized with a yellow card from the referee, though the crowd didn’t seem to mind.

“The refs issued yellow cards to those four, at which point the crowd started to chant ‘Equal pay-- Equal pay--’ just like in the Women’s World Cup this summer,” teammate Lydia Sheeser, 14, told CNN.

Colts girls capture Class D state title - Sports - Ionia Sentinel - Standard-Ionia, MI - Ionia,

SHEPHERD — The Hillsdale Academy girls cross country team accomplished a historic first on Saturday.

* * *

The Colts girls captured their first Michigan Class D Cross Country State Championship in team history at Maple Street Golf Club in Shepherd, scoring 80 points to win a tight race with Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart to bring home the crown.

The Class D state championship is distinct from the MHSAA state championship, and was created by Class D coaches after the MHSAA moved to four equal divisions in 2001 to give small schools a chance to compete on a more level playing field for a state title.

Hillsdale Academy's boys had won the championship in the past, but the girls had never brought home the title until this season.

The Colts' championship run was buoyed by four all-state finishers, led by Megan Roberts' seventh-place finish (20:24.8).

Athlete of the Week: Annie Bagnall, Holy Redeemer girls soccer - Sports - Citizens' Voice

Holy Redeemer senior Annie Bagnall reached a major milestone, scoring her 150th goal last Monday in a match against Lake-Lehman.

One of the WVC's most consistent scorers in girls soccer the last couple years, Bagnall was named The Citizens' Voice Athlete of the Week presented by Coordinated Health.

What did it mean to reach a milestone like you did? I don't count my goals at all. Other people do it for me, but I don't want to know. I was just scoring to score, because we needed a goal and we wanted to win.

So when did you actually know you had scored No. 150? Right after I scored, my coaches ran onto the field with the ball. I thought I was in trouble because they were sprinting onto the field.

Obviously, 150 goals don't happen overnight. How does it feel when you consider all the work that has gone into your success? The team helped me with all of it. I wouldn't have gotten anywhere without the team. If they didn't push me to be my best player, then I wouldn't have done anything I've been able to do.
