Gamer beware: 13 spooky video games to play this Halloween

The games below, for the most part, are either recent releases or recently came to new platforms. While most of them try to genuinely scare you, some of them just want you to have a good time — with ghosts.

If you're looking for a Ghostbusters vibe in video game form, Luigi's Mansion 3 is an excellent choice. Like most games in the Super Mario universe, there is a lot about Luigi's Mansion that is actually colorful and incredibly charming, even when its ghostly antagonists are trying to spook you out. Easily the most family-friendly game on this list, Luigi's Mansion is all about sucking up ghosts and engaging in some light puzzle-solving as you explore a surprisingly large (and diverse) hotel that somehow includes locales like retail shops and a sizable theater.

Developed here in Dallas-Fort Worth by Gearbox Software, Borderlands 3 has attracted millions of players to run, shoot and loot with their friends! 13 spooky video games to play this Halloween - wiredfocus www.wiredfocus.com/ 13 - spooky - video - ...halloween 13 spooky video games to play this Halloween - wiredfocus Gamer beware , you're in for a scare. Or at least some lightly spooky vibes. It's Halloween season , and while the month of October is generally known as a good time for scary movies, scary video games deserve attention, too.!! From Oct. 29 through Nov. 4, the game will feature a free event called "Bloody Harvest," during which players can explore a new area named Heck (really) and encounter spooky enemy variants like Rakk-O'Lanterns and the sinister Captain Haunt. There is, of course, some unique loot to earn, too, including new skins for the game's four characters.

Battle Creek couple turn love for video games into downtown business

Miles Hicks jostled with his Nintendo Switch controller as he beat one challenger after another at Super Smash Bros.

"I'm so happy I came," he said. "I drove two hours for this and will do it again. I'm going to try to make it at least twice a month."

Maurice Anderson, co-owner and founder of Battle Creek's newest downtown video game club, said these are the vibes opponents in the fighting game community have with each other.

"There's an interpersonal element to fighting games that makes it different than other gaming communities," he said. "Everyone is always trying to help other people."

The club, located at 104 Calhoun Street in downtown Battle Creek, is open Friday nights for people interested in video games, specifically fighting games.

Maurice had always been into fighting games, because of an uncle who used to bring him to arcades when he was a kid. It didn't take long for Maurice to fall in love.

Many things are taking place:

How video game development has changed over the last decade

Technological advancements have given us 4K resolutions and smoother performance, opening a door to allow more and more to be packed into a single game. In 2010, Call of Duty: Black Ops took up about 12GB of hard drive space. In 2019, the remake of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will clock in at an astounding 175GB.

Outside of the gaming sphere, cultural shifts and the rise in popularity of social media and streaming have left their mark on the industry both directly and indirectly.

All of this has affected game development in various ways. The makeup of game development teams have changed; the kinds of games being made have changed; the ways games are produced, marketed, and monetized have changed; and relationships between developers and gamers have changed.

Brenda Romero, an award-winning industry veteran who helped create the classic series Jagged Alliance and is currently working on the upcoming game Empire of Sin , said all the shifts in the past decade have been unbelievable.

How a video game helped me get a base hit in Cooperstown - Polygon

My high school was so small, baseball tryouts were really more of a first practice, because everyone would make the team. That's a good thing, because in the spring of 1988 I was up there missing every pitch, terribly. In my mind's eye, I was trying to replicate the swings I saw in Hardball-- on the Commodore 64 , which was one of the first sports video games to have a broadcast-like depiction.

Coach Dillon rolled his eyes when I blamed video games for my terrible swings, and gently asked that I stop playing them during the season. I chuckled at this memory when I stood on first base last weekend in Cooperstown, N.Y., — the mythological home of the sport and site of its very real Hall of Fame. I honestly believe I got my hits there thanks to buckling down and playing MLB The Show 19 as a hitter, like I haven't in almost a decade.

I wasn't patterning my swing on my created superstar, who bats left-handed (I'm a righty). But I was using all of the anticipation, guesswork and patience I had developed in batting .400, on Hall-of-Fame difficulty, during his rookie season. Sure, there were a few restarts of some pretty bad games. But I still had to hit the ball, and this year, I applied myself at the plate, feeling as though I had been neglecting half of the game by focusing so much on pitching in past career modes.
