Fun Science FRIEDay – Inception | Southern Fried Science

Inception, a clever movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio where the premise of the story is to sneak into a person’s subconscious and implant an idea or a memory whilst they sleep! Including results for fun science friday – inception | Search only for Fun Science FRIEDay – Inception |!! When the person awakes from their slumber they cannot distinguish the implanted memory from their own. It makes for blockbuster cinematography, but the practical concept is quite frightening to think about: the ability to artificially implant memories inches closer to the prospect of reality distortion.

In a major breakthrough, scientists have waded into the realm of the fantastical by accomplishing the difficult task of Inception . Researchers at the  University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center have been working on understanding how memories are encoded in the brain, specifically using  Zebra finches to understand memories that guide the development of speech and social skills.

Lab rats play hide-and-seek for the fun of it, new study shows | Science | AAAS

Every child knows that a proper game of hide-and-seek must follow a strict set of rules. Players can't switch from being the "seeker" to the "hider" midway through the game, for example, and hiders have to stay put until they're found! Now, scientists have discovered that lab rats can rapidly learn the rules to hide-and-seek and, so far as they can tell, love playing the game with people.

Neuroscientist Michael Brecht of the Humboldt University of Berlin got the idea for his experiment from YouTube. "There are all these YouTube videos from pet owners that say their animals love to do this," he says. Although it's well known that rats play lots of rough-and-tumble games, hide-and-seek is so much more elaborate that Brecht wondered whether they could really do it.

Each game began with a rat inside a lidded box. When the rat was the "seeker," Reinhold would close the box and hide, opening the lid with a remote control! Norwich Science Festival 2019 has the formula for fun on chemisty day | Norfolk and Suffolk

Dr Jamie Gallagher will bring his interactive talk, Mindblowing Materials, to The Forum, Auditorium on October 24 at 10.30am Picture: Steve Cross

For some of us the word chemistry might conjure up the memory of long hours in the classroom frantically noting down chemical formulas from a whiteboard, but there's so much more to this scientific discipline.

One of the events during the day is Mindblowing Materials, an hour-long interactive talk presented by Dr Jamie Gallagher at The Forum.

"Mindblowing Materials is about showing people chemistry in action, and demonstrating why it's so important to our understanding of the world," explains Jamie. "Chemistry is an often overlooked scientific field, so a big part of the talk is putting chemistry into context - it's so much more than just equations, you can see the real world implications all around you."

Many things are taking place:

Pedal Powered Party, FREE Juggling Shows and Food Fun at the Science and Industry Museum this

No pedalling, no party-- That's the mantra being repeated at The Science and Industry Museum in Manchester this October Half Term with the launch of a People Powered Party that relies on the enthusiasm and energy of cyclists to get the music pumping and lights flashing.

As part of over 30 activities, workshops and shows announced to take place over the two-week school break, families will power their own disco to explore the key principles of eating, energy and exercise.

Six dynamo bikes, suitable for kids, parents and carers of all ages to saddle up on and get spinning, provide the spark that starts the party as the Museum's centrepiece activity brings nutrition and good health to the fore. As well as the electrifying bikes and disco dancing, the People Powered Party (Wednesday 23 October – Wednesday 30 October) also includes nutrition-based guessing games, trampette energy-burn competitions and healthy plate-building activities to inform and inspire.

Saturn becomes 'true moon king' as scientists count 82 orbiting the planet - ABC News

Twenty more moons have been discovered orbiting Saturn, giving the ringed planet 82 — at very least — scientists have revealed.

The discovery establishes Saturn as the planet in our solar system with the most moons, surpassing Jupiter's 79, according to astronomer Scott Sheppard of the Carnegie Institution for Science.

* * *

The newly discovered moons, each barely 5 kilometres in diameter, are miniscule when compared with Saturn's biggest moon, Titan, which is more than 5,000 kilometres in diameter.

Dr Sheppard and his team used a telescope in Hawaii to spot Saturn's previously unseen moons over the summer.

Astronomers have pretty much completed the inventory of moons, Dr Sheppard said, adding that future larger telescopes would be needed to see anything smaller.
