Candidate's ex-senator dad lobbies for Chinese tech firm. That could be a problem

Matt Lieberman, son of former Sen. Joe Lieberman, is running for Senate in Georgia. (Screenshot/Lieberman for Senate/YouTube)

U.S. national security experts of all political stripes agree: Chinese tech behemoth ZTE is a threat.

The company is a leading candidate to provide new markets with 5G networks, a lightning-fast wireless service that will support advanced technological applications.

A ZTE 5G network, U.S. national security experts warn, would also be able to spy on its users and send purloined data directly to the Chinese Communist Party.

Matt Lieberman is running in a special election to fill a soon-to-be vacated Senate seat in Georgia and is leaning on his dad to help him become the first Democrat in two decades to win a Senate race there.

Americans are increasingly skeptical of elites profiting from their political connections, with many tiring of political dynasties! Valley® Irrigation Advanced Technology Uses AI to Detect Crop Health and Irrigation

This item has been supplied by a forage marketer and has not been edited, verified or endorsed by Hay & Forage Grower.

Valley Insights (valleyirrigation.com) is designed to move growers closer to autonomous crop management, generating greater returns while using fewer inputs and resources. Using computer vision, the service scouts to identify areas of over- or under-irrigation and related plant stress. It goes beyond typical aerial imaging, using artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze the visual data, detect issues and alert the grower so proper actions can be taken.

"Our initial release has been focused in the Northwest, where a late winter created a challenging season for growers," says Troy Long, Senior Director of Product Management for Valley Irrigation. "They would have been hard pressed for time to sift through stacks of aerial images provided by other services, searching for potential irrigation-related issues. Valley Insights analyzes the images and alerts growers to possible crop threats before they become big problems. It has saved our users a lot of valuable time they can now dedicate elsewhere."

Andrew Yang Wants a Thorium Reactor by 2027. Good Luck, Buddy | WIRED

Yet of all Yang's futuristic policies, one in particular stands out for its uniqueness and specificity. To transition the United States from fossil fuels to green energy, Yang wants the government to invest $50 billion in the development of thorium molten-salt nuclear reactors —and he wants them on the grid by 2027.

As in a conventional nuclear reactor, splitting the nuclei of a nuclear fuel—a process known as fission—produces heat, which gets used to turn a turbine to generate electricity. But the Cold War arms race meant the US was already in the business of enriching uranium for weapons, so nuclear reactors based on solid uranium took off while liquid reactors stalled. No country has built a commercial molten-salt reactor.

"There is still a lot of work to be done in terms of demonstrating molten-salt reactor technology, even for uranium-based reactors," Hu says. "Molten-salt reactors need to be demonstrated with a uranium fuel cycle before that system can be used for a thorium fuel cycle. Moving toward a thorium fuel cycle has a lot of unknowns."
