Twist-based refrigeration: Twisting and coiling 'twistocaloric' yarns to keep cool -- ScienceDaily

An international team led by researchers at The University of Texas at Dallas and Nankai University in China has discovered a new technology for refrigeration that is based on twisting and untwisting fibers.

In research published in the Oct. 11 issue of the journal Science , they demonstrated twist-based refrigeration using materials as diverse as natural rubber, ordinary fishing line and nickel titanium wire.

"Our group has demonstrated what we call 'twistocaloric cooling' by changing the twist in fibers. We call coolers that use twist changes for refrigeration 'twist fridges,'" said Dr. Ray Baughman, director of the Alan G. MacDiarmid NanoTech Institute at UT Dallas! Cognitive Development Lab ...The Cognitive Development Labs include the Yellow Lab, directed by Dr. Hilary Barth , and the Blue Lab, directed by Dr. Anna Shusterman . Both of the Cognitive Development Labs are located in Judd Hall  on Wesleyan University's campus.!! Baughman is a corresponding author of the study, along with Dr. Zunfeng Liu, a professor in the State Key Lab of Medicinal Chemical Biology in the College of Pharmacy at Nankai University in Tianjin.

Alterowitz Gym hosts 10th Annual Girls-n-Science event

BILLINGS — Girls who may be pursuing a career in Science, Technology, Engineering and/or Math (STEM) received some encouragement on Saturday.

Girls-n-Science provided an opportunity to learn about careers in these fields at 31 different booths.

Girls from fourth through eighth grades were invited to participate in the event held in Alterowitz Gym at the Montana State University-Billings's campus.

The event used to be called "Chicks-n-Science," but the same ideas are still used now to introduce girls to STEM.

"If they don't know how fun it can be and they don't know that those options are even out there, then they tend to go towards other things," said Michelle McMullen, MSUB lecturer. "This way, at least they've been exposed and they have that idea in their head and maybe some really good excitement and fun memories attached to it."
