Carrie Underwood, Dick’s Sporting Goods donate $100K to girls sports programs | TribLIVE.com

Burrell High School’s 2019 homecoming queen skipped Saturday’s school dance to go to country star Carrie Underwood’s concert in Pittsburgh.

Homecoming queen Sara Novak said she and classmate Hannah Koziarski, both student-athletes, were told by district officials that they would be able to pick out an outfit from Underwood’s CALIA line sold by Findlay-based Dick’s Sporting Goods and get a workout with Underwood’s personal trainer before the concert.

What they and eight students from four other Western Pennsylvania districts didn’t know was that they’d also get to meet Underwood, and the country star would present $20,000 checks to each of their districts to benefit girls athletics.

“It was kind of weird missing (the homecoming dance) being homecoming queen, but I don’t really regret not going,” said Novak, 18, of Lower Burrell.

Teen Who Helped Girls Get Into Boy Scouts Says Organization Is Now Keeping Highest Honor From Her

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – A teenager who led the fight to get girls in the Boy Scouts claims the organization is still snubbing her achievements.

* * *

"The Girl Scouts is an incredible organization for some girls, but for me I wanted to… join the Boy Scouts… and eventually be able to achieve the eagle award which is a very prestigious award and opens up a lot of doors that previously were not open for young women."

Sydney first started tagging along to her older brother’s Boy Scout meetings when she was four years-old. By the time she turned 11, Sydney had met all the requirements to earn the highest Cub Scout award, except one.

"She's done the work, let her have the recognition any Boy Scout would get," Gary Ireland, the scout's father said.

"The highest I could get in Girl Scouts was in first class because that's all I had and as soon as I left high school nobody cared! Sports events, including half-marathons and girls' softball, get grants

Five local amateur sports events being held over the next four months — ranging from two half-marathons to a girls' softball tournament — will be getting tax-funded grants.

The funding, through the Space Coast Office of Tourism's Sports & Event Grant Program, is designed to support events that bring to the area visitors, who will spend money at local hotels, restaurants and retail shops.

The grants are funded by Brevard County's 5% Tourist Development Tax on hotel rooms and other short-term rentals.

• Up to $20,000 to Tropical Sports & Wellness Solutions for the 2019 Chiro Games, a 14-sport tournament for chiropractic colleges from the United States and Canada.

The event will be held Nov. 9-10 at seven venues in Cocoa Beach and Merritt Island. It is projected to generate 715 nights of hotel room rentals.
