Video games, esports, game culture all will play on new VENN network

"We are creating a singular media brand at the nexus of Gaming, Entertainment, and the GenZ + Millennial generations, across a highly fragmented video marketplace," said Ben Kusin, a video game veteran previously with Electronic Arts and Vivendi Games, who is co-CEO of the new venture with Ariel Horn, a former NBC Sports producer (winner of four Emmys) and Riot Games executive.

Streaming video: NBCUniversal pins streaming hopes on Peacock service, sets April launch date

The network's co-CEOs announced $17 million in seed funding and some of its investors, which include Twitch co-founder Kevin Lin, Riot Games co-founder Marc Merrill, Blizzard Entertainment co-founder Mike Morhaime, and Blizzard's former global esports head Amy Morhaime.

Kusin says earlier this year he pitched the idea of a TV network centered around video games, esports, and game culture and entertainment to Merrill. "He laughed, let me know that his former Global EP at Riot (Ariel) had just presented him a similar concept earlier that day, and said he'd feel better about backing the project if we teamed up," Kusin said.

While you're here, how about this:

You're never alone in video games anymore.

This might make me sound antisocial, like someone who grew up escaping into games. There might be some truth to that, but I don't really think of it that way. To me, it's more like I was dealing with people all day long at school, figuring out who I was, and loved farting around in these weird little worlds with imaginary problems and catchy repetitive music and sloppy mistranslated dialogue. When all there was on TV were Looney Tunes reruns, games like Mega Man 2 and Bionic Commando were like being transported to a vibrant fever dream. These alternate realities rarely made sense and were supremely charming because of it. You weren't playing for the story because games then really only had loose premises.

I am not warming up for a long, curmudgeonly rant about how video games used to be better in my day. But this is an interesting and new experiment for video games, one that raises a lot of questions. Or, at least, one question: Why?

As the multibillion-dollar industry of video games continues to soar, parents are now weighing the options when it comes to allowing their children to play them and how much is too much.

It's a tough call for many parents, especially in the age where children as young as 13 can become millionaires for winning a Fornite tournament.

Some parents have gone as far as suing game makers for not warning them how addictive the games are . Other parents don't let their kids play at all. Many, however, let their kids play as much as they want.

Colleges, such as Becker College, are now offering degrees in professional video game playing, something many of us wish would have been around when we were still in college.
