Coaching sessions for Fortnite, Apex Legends, League of Legends are a part of the video game

Anthony Yeo remembered the panic. Playing Fortnite with his niece Poppy Ford, whenever their foes' shots found him, he would wildly build cover, hastily assembling any kind of fortification to stave off elimination.

"Now what do I do?" Yeo, 46, asked his niece over a video chat. The 13-year-old Fortnite veteran replied.

The lesson was well-known to Ford, an avid Fortnite player, but it required a little drilling before Yeo could embrace it. It was a lesson taught to them by Cody Lefevre, a 26-year-old lacrosse coach and elementary school PE teacher in Colorado who, for $175 per 90 minutes, moonlights as a coach for aspiring Fortnite amateurs.

The increased prevalence of competitive video games in social circles throughout the world, but particularly with today's youth, has sparked a desire by players to improve. In turn, that has fostered a cottage industry for accomplished gamers to instruct the less-savvy in the ways of smart gaming. Just as some people seek out a tennis or golf coach to assist them in their weekly matches with friends, so too are children and adults enlisting people like Lefevre to level up their online abilities.

The encounter that ended with gunfire started in the basement of the 14-year-old's DeKalb County home. He and two other friends, including 16-year-old Tariq Thomas, were playing video games Sunday evening.

Thomas said he headed upstairs but saw his 14-year-old friend attempting to cock his gun. Then, he heard a shot.

Officers said they saw no damage to the home and didn’t buy that story. They said they found a spent 9 mm casing near a TV.

The 14-year-old boy was charged with reckless conduct and possession of a firearm by a minor. Despite that, he is not in custody and was allowed back home with his mother.

Luigi's Mansion 3 video game review - The Washington Post

Mario may be the most recognizable mascot in gaming but I've long been partial to his brother Luigi, probably because he seems like the more conflicted of the two. Whereas Mario is short, round and confident, Luigi is lanky and bumbling — qualities dear to my heart. Yet, despite my affinity for the younger brother — one of my go-to's in "Mario Kart" — I haven't settled my thumbs around a "Luigi's Mansion" game until recently. I never had a GameCube, for which the original was a launch title, nor the leisure to try its sequel, "Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon" on the 3DS. Having arrived late to the party, it's taken me some time to acclimate to the ghostbusting and puzzle solving for which the series is known. Although I still find the controls a tad awkward, "Luigi's Mansion 3" strikes me as a diverting, fall treat.

In the middle of the night, Luigi awakens to the scream of Princess Peach. Shivering with fear, he gets out of bed and goes into the hallway where his surroundings have undergone quite the metamorphosis. Wilted, thorny looking plants lay on the hallway tables along with candles and piles of skulls. Door frames and picture frames are askew and the walls are drably colored and stained with age.
