And, if you grew up speaking Spanish in Mexico City, (as I, Silvia, did), or Hebrew on a small kibbutz in Israel (as I, Lavie, did), it meant that the world of science fiction, filtered through translation, was as remote and alien as the other side of the moon. The very idea we could be writing novels like these seemed, well, fantastical.
Yet, somehow, here we are. The past decade has seen the science-fiction world change as more international voices enthusiastically jumped into the fray. Now, wonderful writers including Malaysian Zen Cho can write smart, funny fantasies such as "Sorcerer to the Crown"; after years of struggle, Nigerian Tade Thompson's ambitious Africa-set novel, "Rosewater," was published to wide acclaim and recently won the prestigious Arthur C. Clarke Award; and Chinese author Liu Cixin's "The Three-Body Problem," translated by Ken Liu, has become a best-seller and even has a recommendation from former president Barack Obama.

It was around March 2019. I was in LA pitching projects to various studios in Hollywood. In the evenings I would catch up with friends and other filmmakers I knew.
Every pitch or general meeting I had, I would get asked the same question in the form of – "How did I make my sci-fi feature films feel so expensive and high end – yet done for a fraction of a cost?" I would proceed to explain in detail and most of it reflected to just having a smart production workflow and an out of the box approach to production yet being aware of all the stages required to make a film.
I continued sharing my process in conversations with friends, fellow filmmakers and executive meetings. Everyone would instantly react impressed and bedazzled at the same time, before telling me that this knowledge is golden and should be taught in film schools today! More than 100 science fiction, fantasy and horror authors, artists and other participants will speak and autograph books at the 51st annual MileHiCon literary convention Oct. 18-20 at the Hyatt Regency Denver Tech Center, 7800 E. Tufts Ave, Denver.
The convention will feature authors, artists, speakers and programming on every aspect of the science fiction and fantasy genres, including the largest science fiction/fantasy art show and auction in Colorado, round-the-clock gaming, a vendors room full of science fiction, fantasy and horror-related items a CosPlay (costume) contest and Critter Crunch (robotic sumo wrestling).
More than 60 authors will participate in a mass author autograph session on Oct. 19, and a literacy auction with hundreds of donated items will benefit a Denver-based charity literacy program.
More than 200 programs include sessions on writing, publishing, artist demonstrations, hands-on workshop, science presentations, autograph sessions, kids' programming, CosPlay, gaming and more. In addition, more than 100 science fiction, fantasy and horror authors, artists, speakers, and performers will read from works in-progress and discuss various aspects of writing, publishing, themes and more.

For all the reasons that I throw out about why this whole business is far from straightforward, here's the thing: the authors of the study themselves are happy to engage with all of these issues. Sturgeon's Law states that ninety per cent of everything is crap. Theodore Sturgeon, the science fiction author who came up with the rule, really did mean everything, not just books: "film, literature, consumer goods, etc…" Why does science fiction continue to get it in the neck as one of the worst genres for quality of writing, then? Maybe the answer lies in the fact that it's yet another easy, lazy response to make without looking at what's really going on, or indeed, what even qualifies as science fiction nowadays.
