Billionaire Mohamed Mansour On How To Survive The Politics of Envy

"It was a pizza restaurant," he laughs, "I was in my teens, studying engineering in America. I had to win my monthly income, which was $200 dollars a month. Top 10 Billionaires In Africa And How They Made Their Money howafrica.com/top-10- billionaires ... Mohamed is the Founder and Chairman of Mansour Automotive Company ( General Motors' distributor in the world outside of China), Mantrac Group and Unatrac ( Caterpillar's distributor ) and former Chairman of Cr̩dit Agricole Egypt Рthe country's second-largest bank. It was a wake up call for me but it helped make me the man I am today."

Mansour is now able to speak with good humor about the moment Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nassar seized his father's cotton trading business and the family's fortune firstly in 1964, before facing the same fate again in Sudan, 1970.

While the hot winds of nationalism and socialism that swept through Cairo and Khartoum seem very distant from London's Knightsbridge where Mansour's London investment office is based today there are some echoes of the past. Jeremy Corbyn, leader of Britain's Labour Party, champions state takeover of key assets and "redistribution" of wealth while French economist Thomas Piketty is currently calling for a 90% tax on billionaires.

London's calling for trade job hopefuls

Treasury, for instance, has turned its attention to the return of the position of Agent-General for NSW — a London-based trade job abolished by the then premier John Fahey in 1993.

Among Treasury mandarins, it's no secret that the Greater Sydney Commission's deputy chief commissioner Geoff Roberts is the frontrunner for the London job — having been a key player in signing up major overseas corporations like BAE Systems to the Western Sydney Airport precinct.

Another name which some in Cabinet have suggested — and who might make it on to Treasurer Dominic Perrottet's shortlist — is NSW Liberal finance director Michael Hughes.
