The 1950s began very strong for Disney, especially compared with the 1940s. That decade was one in which the Disney animators worked on package films such as Make Mine Music and Fun and Fancy Free, while also being on the hook for U.S. Army propaganda for the World War II effort. When Cinderella opened in 1950, it was a massive box-office hit that served as a reminder that the studio could balance its ambitions with crowd-pleasing stories. The following year brought Alice in Wonderland, which was enough of a dud at the box office that, unlike other films from the studio, it wasn't re-released for nearly 25 years, and only then as a way to capitalize on the popularity of psychedelia. Disney's next two films, Peter Pan and Lady and the Tramp, were both hits, the latter of which became the studio's biggest success since Snow White.

'A Star Is Born': Bradley Cooper isn't really into talking to me
The first trailer for the remake of A Star Is Born, featuring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, has been released. It is Cooper's first feature film as director, as well as Lady Gaga's first significant film acting role. Video: Warner Bros
A Star Is Born: the film has been a full-on occupation for Bradley Cooper for four years

Bradley Cooper is not not happy to be on the press tour for A Star Is Born, the film he specifically, exactingly, meticulously, perfectionistically, obsessively directed, cowrote and stars in. In fact he's very not not happy-- He worked so hard on this movie. Every detail of it comes from a true thing – something he has learnt, something he has seen, something he knows for sure. It's such hard work to try for something true and to get it right, and maybe he has succeeded.

Quite a lot has been going on:

Rough Magic theatre, 35 years on: 'Dublin in those days was so bohemian'
Lisa Lambe, Darragh Kelly, Peter Hanly, Cathy White, Declan Conlon and Rory Nolan in Improbable Frequency, in 2004
Rough Magic artistic director Lynne Parker: 'If you're really, really determined and you don't admit of any other possibility, you'll make it work somehow. You can't be told not to do it
A Midsummer Night's Dream in 2018: Aoibhéann McCann, Kieran Roche, Karen McCartney, Paul Mescal and Peter Corboy
Paul Mallon, Raymond Scannell, Mags McAuliffe, John Cronin, Jody O'Neill in Digging for Fire in 2013

It's fascinating how the same set of words can have so many different meanings. I'm sitting in on rehearsals for Rough Magic's forthcoming production of Much Ado About Nothing. Clare Barrett, Maeve Fitzgerald and Venetia Bowe are trying out a scene; drawing nuances of emphasis and feelings from Shakespeare's comedy of love and misunderstanding. When I arrived, Fitzgerald and Barrett were playing swingball on a set that may or may not feature in the final production.
