And now, just a few months after it began shipping the first models to Kickstarter supporters, the Lumi app is adding new features, including a platform-jumping style game it calls Springboard. Players need to read the music on the app screen and hit the right key in sync with the song to get your hero to jump from note to note. It's an irresistible challenge when the songs you're trying to match are Van Halen's "Jump," or Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger.

I spent a few weeks with Lumi, along with an early beta version of the Springboard game, which is set to arrive this week. The keyboard itself costs $299 (also £299 in the UK), and with it comes a selection of video courses and music.

Are in-app purchases ruining mobile video games? - BBC News

Particularly when games advertised as "free" come with in-app purchases, sometimes known as microtransactions.

"If money hinders you from playing this game that's posing as free-to-play, but it's not - that's what frustrates me," says Jay-Ann Lopez, founder of Black Girl Gamers, talking on this week's BBC Sounds Press X to Continue podcast.

"I don't want to be advertised to all the time. And I think it's becoming quite dangerous, how advertisements are everywhere.

The Biggest Video Games Coming in March 2021 | CBR

When compared to that stellar lineup, March 2021 is severely lacking any sort of major studio releases save for a Nintendo-exclusive Monster Hunter title along with a smattering of ports and next-gen upgrades of existing games. To fill this void, however, there are a handful of charming and unique indie titles coming out that can finally take center stage without being overshadowed by the AAA experiences that usually dominate the conversation.

Returnal, Skyward Sword and the value of video games | Opinion | GamesIndustry.biz

The thorny issue of video game pricing has reared its head in recent weeks. First, Nintendo revealed a remaster of the Wii game The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, complete with $60/£50 price tag. Fans took to social media: How can Nintendo justify that? A port of a game at the same price as an entirely original product? People were furious, and then rushed to Amazon and pre-ordered it anyway .

But is that right? Few companies know how to sell games to consumers better than Nintendo and Sony, so what's going on here?

Why Were Old Video Games So Pixelated?

If you didn’t grow up in the 20th century, you might wonder why video and computer games once used such blocky, pixelated graphics. We’ll explore the origins of pixel art and how graphics have exploded in complexity over time.

The pixelated artwork in older video games—where the display resolution is low enough that the pixels are obvious and blocky—was largely the result of low-resolution television sets and the high cost of memory chips and digital logic at the time those games were created relative to today.
