Contrary to popular belief, there is not (that we know) a definitive guide book on how to dress when you're a member of the royal family. But in her 66 years on the throne, the Queen has built up a repertoire which suggests some firm pointers - bright colours, modest yet formal cuts, British designers and, of course, an excellent hat (if it's before 6pm) are all cornerstones of the royal dressing, HM style.
Which is why it was at once exciting, refreshing and, yes, a little disconcerting at times when Meghan Markle arrived on the scene two and a half years ago and fast began using her fashion choices to underscore her potential as a modernising force, by appearing in looks which often confounded those unwritten rules.
