Catskills Resort That Inspired 'Dirty Dancing' Getting TV Show - Syracuse.Com

Generations of New Yorkers and New Jerseyans flocked to Grossinger's , the famous resort and hotel in the Catskills .

A major star in the upstate New York constellation of recreation that was the Borscht Belt, Grossinger's also served as inspiration for the hit movie " Dirty Dancing " (1987).

He later got his start in comedy by selling jokes to veteran Borscht Belt comedians before joining "SNL," where he created the Gilda Radner characters Emily Litella and Roseanne Roseannadanna (who would react to imagined letters from one Richard Feder of Fort Lee, Zweibel's brother-in-law).

Zweibel is working on the Grossinger's series with Harris F.B. Salomon, who produced "The Dr. Ruth Show" and owns Atlantic Overseas Pictures, the company that has the rights to the Grossinger's story.

The family created one of the major spaces where Jews were welcome in the Catskills after being shut out and discriminated against elsewhere.

"The Mountains" will also show how the Borscht Belt wasn't just an escape from the punishing heat of summer in the city — it also became a performance hub, a proving ground and rite of passage for comedians and entertainers who would become household names.
