"I'd just close my eyes and sing because I was too nervous to speak," she said, chuckling at the memory. "I eventually grew out of that no speaking phase since I love to talk now."
Jones will be talking as well as performing plenty of hits popularized by the "Queen of Rock and Roll" during "The Music of Tina Turner," taking place at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Orpheum Theatre, 528 Pierce St.
She is taking the stage with Helen Hayes Award winner Nova Y. Payton as well as the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra under the baton of musical director Ryan Haskins.
Tackling the song catalog of the legendary "Private Dancer" seems pretty daunting, but Jones is used to facing skeptical opinions. After all, she was able to pass muster with judge Simon Cowell as a contestant during season six of "American Idol."
Even though she didn't win that season of "American Idol" (Jordin Sparks took home the top prize), Jones went on the road for a concert tour with the show.
Post-"Idol," she's released record albums and appeared in the musical version of "The Color Purple" on Broadway.
