Scientists in Alaska bounced radio signals off an asteroid Tuesday from the High-frequency Active Auroral Research Program research site in Gakona. The experiment will be preparation for a more spectacular near-Earth asteroid fly-by in six years.
There is a little asteroid that will be close to earth this week — about twice as far away from Earth as the moon is.
An Asteroid Is Passing Earth Today, so Scientists Are Shooting It With Radio Waves
A group of researchers is attempting to bounce radio signals off a 500-foot-wide asteroid during its close flyby of Earth on Tuesday.
The High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP) is aiming its antennas at asteroid 2010 XC15, a space rock that's categorized as a near- Earth potentially hazardous asteroid.
Asteroid Launcher: How to see the impact of one hitting your home
What would happen if a devastating asteroid hit your hometown or state? Thanks to a new web app, you can find out who, or what, would survive.
First you'll choose what type of asteroid will hit Earth, choosing from one made of stone, iron, carbon, gold or comet.

Ryugu is a near-Earth asteroid , with a diameter of 900 meters, that was first discovered in 1999 and was named after the undersea palace of the Dragon God in Japanese mythology.
Now, an international team of researchers used UK's national synchrotron facility Diamond Light Source to map out the chemical states of the elements collected from the asteroid and examine its composition in fine detail.

Small planetary bodies will be the big focus of space exploration in 2023.
NASA makes asteroid defense a priority, moving its NEO surveyor mission into the development phase
Typically, their signals are just background noise against the overwhelming signal from the sun. But NEO Surveyor will be able to detect individual asteroid heat signatures, allowing it to isolate potentially dangerous asteroids using this novel technique.
But, as with all bureaucracies, NASA has budgetary difficulties, and NEO Surveyor was no exception. The agency originally canceled NEO Surveyor's budget for the fiscal years 2022 and 2023, forcing project scientists and engineers to move on to other projects for their salaries.
Students can be part of Asteroid Search Campaign - The Hindu
The Cosmology Education and Research Training Centre (COSMOS), Mysuru is facilitating an asteroid search campaign where students get to work on actual data from the PanSTARRS telescope in Hawaii in collaboration with Hands-on Universe, India.
The campaign is part of the International Asteroid Search Campaign conducted by the International Astronomical Search Collaboration (IASC). Students/ interested people will be given datasets of photographs taken by the telescope to analyse and training on how to report them.
One astronomical object could be the best resource for future space colonies
The stars call to us, as Carl Sagan once said. Given the human drive to explore our world and expand our reach, it is likely only a matter of time before we begin to build our homes in the Solar System.
There has long been a dream of building a massive rotating space station to call home, such as the one featured in 2001: A Space Odyssey , but the challenges of construction are huge, not to mention the logistics of lifting such large quantities of steel and other materials into space.
