Riskiest Asteroid Known to Humankind in the Last Year Will Not Strike Earth for at Least 100 Years

"These early observations gave us more information about the asteroid's path, which we then projected into the future," said Richard Moissl, ESA's Head of Planetary Defense. "We could see its future paths around the Sun, and in 2052 it could come dangerously close to Earth.

Just as the risk appeared to be increasing, an (im)perfect cosmic alignment occurred: the asteroid's path brought it closer to the Sun as seen from Earth, and for months it became impossible to see due to our host star's brilliant glare.

What will an asteroid strike on Earth be like? Know the horror!

Space is full of objects like asteroids, comets, stars, planets, meteors, stars, galaxies and more. There are instances when due to the gravitational pull Earth tends to attract certain objects like asteroids and meteors and they do crash onto Earth.

Therefore, staying alert and prepared is important as any similar strike will destroy Earth in unfathomable ways and may even lead to extinction of humans. Yes, the potential for horror is massive.

Earth's asteroid defense may work better than previously believed, new simulation shows

Following the launch of NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) asteroid defense mission in November of 2021, researchers in Switzerland created a simulation that predicts the method of deflecting a large asteroid away from Earth may work far better than previously believed.

How an asteroid almost hit Earth and shocked the United Nations

Less than a decade ago, an asteroid the size of a small cabin exploded above a town in Russia. No one knew it was coming.

Spurred by a near miss, the world built an alert system to detect asteroids heading for Earth. But it's not clear who would decide what to do next.

NASA reports 'significant progress' in rescuing Lucy's solar array | Space

A stubborn solar array on the NASA Lucy mission might yield enough to allow the mission to continue its asteroid-hunting mandate with few issues, NASA reports.

The agency said it has made "significant progress" in dealing with a solar array on the Lucy mission  that failed to fully deploy after the spacecraft's launch, which took place in October 2021. Engineers have been troubleshooting the matter for months.

Radar Observations of Near-Earth Asteroid 7335 1989 JA

This collage and animation represent NASA radar observations of near-Earth asteroid 7335 1989 JA on May 26, 2022, one day before it made its closest approach with Earth.

1989 JA is a binary system, consisting of a large asteroid and a significantly smaller satellite asteroid that revolve around each other without touching. The larger asteroid is about 0.4 miles (700 meters) across and shows several topographic features as it rotates.

The amateur asteroid hunters giving NASA a run for its money - EastMojo

Even with millions in funding and super high-tech equipment, the world's space agencies need a helping hand from people at home.

On this year's list of the top five asteroid hunters in the world , it's no surprise the top four spots are filled by multimillion-dollar NASA-funded projects. But coming in at number five is a trio of amateurs, Alain Maury, Georges Attard and Daniel Parrott.

Simulations show that asteroid impacts would destroy evidence for relic shorelines on Mars – ...

If ancient shorelines exist on Mars, they would be largely scoured from view by billions of years of asteroid impacts. That is according to a new study by researchers in the US, who used computer modelling to simulate eons of cratering on the Martian surface.

Since the 1990s, some planetary scientists have argued that certain landforms and surface features on Mars are the relic edges of dried-up oceans that covered huge swathes of the Red Planet.
