Eau Claire (WQOW) - Sources report that the national video game industry has been on a steady incline, but are local gaming stores seeing the same result?
A report from NPD Group indicates that nationwide, consumers spent a second quarter record of $11.6 billion on video gaming products from April to June. That's 30% higher than this time last year.
William Brown, the store manager of Gaming Generations in Eau Claire, said their sales for gaming consoles are 60% higher than last year.

Phillies' Connor Brogdon had a video game to finish before joining team
Connor Brogdon had a good feeling Tuesday afternoon that he was receiving his call to the majors when his phone flashed the name of Josh Bonifay, the Phillies' director of player development.

The Phillies called on Brogdon, a 25-year-old right-hander with a 97-mph fastball, to help their bullpen, which entered Wednesday with the highest ERA, WHIP, and opponent's batting average in the major leagues.
Brogdon had a 2.61 ERA last season in 51 games across high-A Clearwater, double-A Reading, and triple-A Lehigh Valley. He was one of a handful of relievers the team stashed at its alternative training site in Allentown, knowing that their services would likely be needed in 2020. And Brogdon was the first to get the call to the big leagues.
U.S. Video Game Sales Set Record Second Quarter, Spurred By Pandemic
The Switch has been especially popular: last week, Nintendo announced it sold 5.7 million units between April and June, making for 61.4 million consoles sold since launch in 2017.
The second quarter saw a rise of 7% over the first quarter, which also saw record spending of $10.9 billion between January and March, with the U.S. calling a national emergency and states beginning to lock down in mid-March.
"During the pandemic, many have turned to video games not only to keep them preoccupied, but also to stay in touch with family and friends," said Mat Piscatella, NPD's games analyst. "This has resulted in an acceleration of what were already established trends toward heightened video game player engagement. I don't see any signs of this slowing down."
New research shows video games improve literacy | GamesIndustry.biz
According to this survey, 79% of young people who play video games also read material related to the medium. This includes in-game communications for 40% of the respondents, reviews and blogs for 31%, books for 22%, and fan fiction for 19%.
Games seem to be a good way to engage reluctant readers with stories, with 73% of the respondents who don't like to read saying that playing games helps them feel "more part of a story" than reading a book.
58% of the respondents expressed an interest in writing or designing games, while 31% said they would like to read and write more about games in school.

Estée Lauder turns to video games to launch anti-aging serum | Ad Age
Estée Lauder is turning to a seemingly unlikely way to reach customers for its new Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Multi-Recovery Complex—video gaming.
The games, also designed for desktop, include Repair Racer, which lets players speed along a racetrack to collect points, avoid obstacles, and learn about the serum's speed and "youth-generating power." Serum Quest is a sort of '80s throwback where the brand's little brown bottle zaps environmental aggressors and collects golden serum drops, all to the end of helping the serum's antioxidant protection.
Like Old Hollywood Movies, Video Games Get a Polish for New Audiences - The New York Times
Nostalgia has always been a powerful source of revenue for Hollywood. Turns out, it's equally lucrative for video games.
From its beginnings with the likes of Pong, a two-dimensional table tennis game, the video game industry has grown into a $120 billion business. Over the years, memorable games have garnered strong followings. Like Hollywood remakes or remasters old movies, video game publishers are overhauling and rereleasing games to tap into ready-made fan bases for popular franchises like The Legend of Zelda, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon and World of Warcraft.
