The Coronavirus Could Be Terrible News for Video Game Fans | Time

As many people around the world limit their time outdoors for fear of the coronavirus , one might think it’s a boon time for the video game industry, which can provide a form of entertainment that isolated people so desperately need.

News that the Game Developers Conference, or GDC, was being rescheduled came down late Friday. “After close consultation with our partners in the game development industry and community around the world, we’ve made the difficult decision to postpone the Game Developers Conference this March,” reads a statement from the show’s organizers.

'Super Mario,' 'Pac-Man' top most-wanted video game movies

Following the somewhat beleaguered success of Paramount’s “ Sonic the Hedgehog ,” which has collected more than $200 million at the global box office since its Feb. 14 release, a new poll by Hollywood Reporter/Morning Consult suggests that 25% of Americans are indeed eager to see more video game characters on the big screen.

According to the new poll, Nintendo’s “Super Mario Bros.” and Namco’s “Pac-Man” are the two potential video game adaptations most sought by US moviegoers. The poll, conducted from Feb. 21-23 with 2,200 American adults responding, found that 44% were “very” or “somewhat” interested in a film based on Nintendo’s most popular franchise, which debuted on its entertainment system console in 1983.

Gamasutra - Iran video games timeline: from 1970 to 2019

I’ve been doing a research project about Iran’s video games history focusing on how it began, and how it evolved. Through the course of my research I discovered that there were almost no articles in English on the subject, and of the few that exit, none are historical or research-based.

That’s what inspired me to create this document, which should help shine some light on the history of video games in Iran. This is just a small subsection of the larger document I am preparing (in Persian). I thought it would be interesting to compare the history of games in Iran with the recent history of the country itself, pairing important events with events in the video game timeline.

Nintendo dominated February video game sales ranks, led by Animal Crossing | Thinknum Media

Based on the levels of hype, internet chatter, previous sales of games in the series, and the charts above and below, we predict Animal Crossing: New Horizons for the Switch will be the best performing game this year. Over Doom: Eternal, more than Cyberpunk 2077, and whatever the next Call of Duty or Assassin's Creed game is. Animal Crossing has an entire year to steamroll the industry, and it's already lighting up the charts a month before its release.

Typically, when we look at the GameStop data, in particular, we see everything  but  video games in the top slot. Not this month. Animal Crossing did better than any controller, gift card, bundle, console, shirt, or toy. That's astonishing, having sifted through a lot of non-gaming related items over the last year or so. Animal Crossing is a juggernaut that will show up time and time again, so get ready to see it be the top seller in 2020.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake 3-hour hands-on preview impressions - The Washington Post

Final Fantasy 7 Remake is surprisingly challenging. It's as action heavy as Kingdom Hearts, another Square Enix title, requiring precise movement — but it's no Disney game. And it's as engaging as any of the old school Final Fantasy games, requiring quick, decisive party management that could make or break a fight.

Square Enix gave The Washington Post three hours — more than what's been available in the past — to play the highly anticipated remake of the most influential Japanese role-playing game (RPG) of the modern era.

How Video Games Have Escaped Remake Fatigue | Hollywood Reporter

A cursory glance at the 2019 box office reveals why some critics have argued that there are no original ideas in Hollywood. Of the top 10 global earners, only two — Captain Marvel and Joker — were not direct sequels or remakes of existing franchises. And even those revolved around classic comic book characters.

The considerably younger video game industry has escaped such scrutiny even as it mimics the film business in mining catalogs for new content. In 2019, nearly all the 10 top-grossing titles on PC and console devices in the U.S. were direct sequels like Borderlands 3 , incremental sports releases like NBA 2K20 or a reboot like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare , which earned more than $600 million in three days.
