The Best Video Games Of 2019

It's impossible to write a list of the best video games in any given year without leaving something out, simply because there's not enough time to play everything or even a fraction of everything. That's especially true nowadays, with dozens and dozens of smaller, indie titles releasing each month.

Similarly, I have my own tastes and I tend to play the types of games I enjoy most, so I miss a lot of good stuff that appeals to gamers whose tastes differ from my own. That's fine, but worth noting before we move on to the list. We are bound to disagree, and bound to quibble over the order. I know I've missed some great titles this year—I miss great games every year.

Mindfulness video game changes areas of the brain associated with attention

With an estimated 97 percent of adolescents playing video games in their free time, there is growing potential to design games as tools for attention-building instead of attention-busting.

A research team at the Center for Healthy Minds at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and the University of California, Irvine, designed a video game to improve mindfulness in middle schoolers and found that when young people played the game, they showed changes in areas of their brains that underlie attention.

5 Companies That Did Video Games Differently in 2019

From clever engineering solutions to bold artistic endeavors, these companies are pushing the boundaries of what video games can be.

2019 has been a great year for video games, though it has been relatively quiet compared to other years when it comes to large triple-A title releases.

That's likely because Sony and Microsoft are saving big titles for when they both release their shiny new consoles next year — the Xbox X series and the PS5 .

The Year In Tiny Video Game Text, 2019

Games are cheaper than ever, but the three cataract surgeries I paid for this year in order to read the words in them has made the hobby itself way more expensive.

Here are all of the games we could barely read this year, and please be sure to share the ones that eluded your eye as well.

Stellaris is an excellent 4X strategy game that is decided superior on PC, but I decided to play it on Xbox One so I could sit on my couch, a choice Paradox Interactive decided to punish me for by forcing me to manage my space empire as if all my accounting documents had been put through the shredder.

The Decade's Most Influential Video Games

It was a decade of the indies in video games, with a number of smaller developers having an outsized influence. From new genres to controversial revenue schemes to innovative funding strategies, the industry saw evolution from bottom to top.

Minecraft was a pioneer even before its official release in 2011. The title spent its first years in an "early access" state, where players paid a nominal sum to play an in-development beta, a strategy that's been adopted across the industry as a way to test and fund projects.
