Born and raised in Harlem, New York, Just Sam, like many singers before them, took a chance when they appeared on American Idol . Hoping the show would propel them into the spotlight, the singer consistently showcased their talents when covering songs like "I Believe" and "Rise Up." Dominating the show week after week, Just Sam eventually found their way into the finale, becoming the winner of season 18. Although thrilled about their success on American Idol , the singer recently shared they returned to busking to make ends meet, which led to them being attacked.
Showing the aftermath of the altercation, Just Sam told the individual to "Back Up" several times. Thankfully, the incident didn't escalate as the singer returned to their cover of Beyonce's "Irreplaceable."
With the video not showing a great deal of how the altercation came about, Just Sam shared some information on Instagram. They wrote, "The woman in the video attacked me and my sister unprovoked… Nothing like this has ever happened to me before in all my many years of singing underground." Although shaken by the event, the singer insisted, "We are okay and we are always safe. I never ever go to the trains alone. Thank you to everyone for having my back. We are great! God is always protecting us."
While continuing to find their place in music, fans showered Just Sam with love and support. "Love you, Sam! You're always the bigger person. Thank you for being the example. Never allow anyone to dim your bright light!!" And one comment added, "When the enemy sends distractions, that's how you know you're doing something right!"
