NASA spacecraft will soon intentionally crash into a tiny asteroid | News | news-daily.com

The DART mission, or the Double Asteroid Redirection Test, will have a rendezvous with the space rock on September 26 after launching 10 months ago.

The mission is heading for Dimorphos, a small moon orbiting the near-Earth asteroid Didymos . The asteroid system poses no threat to Earth, NASA officials have said, making it a perfect target to test out a kinetic impact -- which may be needed if an asteroid is ever on track to hit Earth.

The Strange, Cigar-Shaped Asteroid That Had Astronomers Fascinated

As the James Webb Telescope continues to prove, space is big. There may be only eight planets in our solar system, but there are 400 billion planets in the Milky Way ... the galaxy, not the candy bar. The total number of planets in the universe might be as high as 21.6 sextillions .

Zipping around all that vastness is a bunch of junk. According to NASA , there are 3,743 known comets, affectionately called "dirty snowballs," with billions more likely floating around in the Kuiper Belt and Oort Cloud . Currently, 1,113,527 known asteroids reside in our solar system alone.

New images show intriguing Perseverance discovery on Mars | News | wsiltv.com

Perseverance has finally collected samples from the site of an ancient river delta, which is full of rock layers that serve as a geological record of the Martian past.

Scientists identified mysterious diamonds that likely originated from a dwarf planet that once existed in our solar system -- until it collided with a large asteroid 4.5 billion years ago.

This Trait of Red Dwarf Star Systems Could Help Us Resolve The Red Sky Paradox : ScienceAlert

There's something very peculiar about Earth, aside from all the organisms crawling all over it. It's our star, the Sun, that's weird: It's a yellow dwarf.

Sun-like stars are a minority in the Milky Way. It's estimated that fewer than 10 percent of the stars in our galaxy are G-type stars, like the Sun.

NASA to crash a spacecraft into an asteroid in humanity's first planetary defence test | ...

It's the familiar plot of every 'end of the world' movie: an asteroid is on a collision course with Earth, and the only one who can save humanity is Bruce Willis in a space jumpsuit.

While the 90s cult classics Armageddon and Deep Impact may only be science fiction, NASA is taking planetary defence seriously.
