Asteroid Bigger than Pyramid Set for Closest Approach to Earth for Century

A massive asteroid bigger than Egypt's Giza Pyramid is due to fly by Earth for the first time in over 100 years on August 20.

The asteroid, named 2019 AV13 , is estimated to measure between around 330 feet and 750 feet in diameter—making it about the size of the 455-foot Great Pyramid.

Dinosaurs: Scientists discover second asteroid that may have caused extinction - CBBC Newsround

Scientists are investigating whether dinosaurs were wiped off our planet not by one asteroid strike, but by two!

It is of a similar age to the crater in the Gulf of Mexico, caused by the Chicxulub asteroid, that is associated with the extinction of the creatures sixty-six million years ago.

Did the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs have a sibling? Crater in West Africa hints maybe.

A likely asteroid impact crater from the latter days of the dinosaurs has been discovered off the coast of West Africa, raising questions about whether the asteroid that wiped out the dinos may have had a smaller sibling that struck around the same time.

The crater, hidden under about 3,000 feet (900 meters) of water and 1,300 feet (400 m) of sediment, hasn't been directly studied yet; it's only been detected in reconstructions of the ocean bed made using seismic waves.

Double Asteroid Impact Could Have Spelled Doom For The Dinosaurs

A newly discovered impact crater in the Atlantic Ocean hints at the possibility that more than one asteroid hit Earth during the time when dinosaurs went extinct.

The presumed impact crater was found during a scientific expedition mapping tectonic structures of the continental shelf along the coast of West Africa.

Scientists find a new asteroid crater that may shed light on Dinosaurs' extinction

Given the name the Nadir Crater, it is located off the coast of Guinea, West Africa, and is 300m below the sea and 400km from the nearest land with a diameter of 8.5km. Although Nadir is not as large as Chicxulub, an analysis of the age of nearby fossils indicates it is a very similar age.

There may be a giant asteroid crater near Africa | Popular Science

When Africa and South America split apart during the Jurassic, birthing the Atlantic Ocean, the separation left a plateau of shallow ocean off the west coast of Guinea.

So in 2017, when Nicholson was examining seismic scans of the region taken by oil and gas exploration vessels, an unexpected feature jumped out: a 5-mile-wide dimple buried deep in the cake.
