Olivia Rodrigo returns with 'Deja Vu': Hear her new song - Los Angeles Times

"So when you gonna tell her that we did that too?" she asks the guy as layered synth lines twinkle around her, "She thinks it's special, but it's all reused."

The same could be said of the clever songwriting and production tricks Rodrigo repeats in "Deja Vu" — the way she makes a musical phrase of someone's laughter (as she did with the chime of a car alarm in "Drivers License"), for instance, or her deployment of an unexpected swear word in the song's bridge (à la the crucial F-bomb she dropped last time).

And anyway, "Deja Vu" — the second single, Rodrigo announced Thursday morning, from her debut album due May 21 — has plenty of its own beautifully rendered detail.

Co-written and produced by Dan Nigro, who also did "Drivers License," the new single paints a vivid scene right from the get-go: "Car ride to Malibu / Strawberry ice cream, one spoon for two," Rodrigo sings wistfully, "And trading jackets / Laughing 'bout how small it looks on you."

She goes on to rhyme "Watching reruns of 'Glee'" with "Being annoying, singing in harmony" — real theater-kid dream-weaving here — before making clear that these treasured memories are just part of a well-established pattern for her ex.

I bet that she knows Billy Joel
'Cause you played her "Uptown Girl"
You're singing it together
I bet you even tell her
How you love her
In between the chorus and the verse

Olivia Rodrigo reveals Pete Davidson is her 'biggest celebrity crush' after on her 18th birthday

Olivia Rodrigo is continuing to dominate the charts with her hit debut single Driver's License, which recently claimed its 7th consecutive week atop the Billboard Hot 100.

Biggest crush: Olivia Rodrigo recently revealed that Pete Davidson is her 'biggest celebrity crush,' during a Tuesday interview with Radio.com (pictured in August, 2019)

The 18-year-old said: 'Pete Davidson, who is my biggest celebrity crush, was singing it and comparing me to Taylor Swift, who is my idol like… it was just insane. It was my 18th birthday too, so it was just a crazy day.'

She wrote on Twitter at the time: 'DRIVERS LICENSE SNL SKETCH IS THE BEST BIRTHDAY PRESENT EVER IM SHAKING'

It comes after Davidson, 27, faced scrutiny for briefly dating Kaia Gerber, 19, back in 2019, just weeks after her 18th birthday.

He's also become infamous for his romantic flings with the likes of Kate Beckinsale, 47, and Margaret Qualley, 26, as well as his whirlwind engagement and subsequent split with Ariana Grande, 27.

Olivia Rodrigo Beats BTS's Most Impressive Record On Billboard's Global Chart

As The Weeknd makes a serious play for the No. 1 spot on Billboard's ranking of the most popular songs in the world with not one, but two tracks, Olivia Rodrigo keeps him at bay with what is turning out to be the hottest single of the year. By holding him off and remaining atop the Billboard Global 200 yet again, the singer beats a record set not long ago by the biggest band on the planet.

Rodrigo is steady at No. 1 for a seventh week on the Billboard Global 200, the charting company's weekly list of the most-consumed songs in the world, which looks at both sales and streaming metrics. She rules again with "Drivers License," which has been the longest-running leader on the recently-established tally for a while, but now the woman behind the tune makes history on the new ranking (it was only introduced in mid-2020) in another manner.

With seven weeks at No. 1, Rodrigo breaks out of a tie for the most frames spent atop the Billboard Global 200 among all acts. Last time around, the teen sensation matched BTS for the most turns in first place, with six apiece. Now, she's blown past the K-pop favorites, at least for the time being.

BTS managed their half-dozen weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Global 200 with three different hit singles, while Rodrigo has thus far only scored one, but it's the biggest leader yet.

The seven-member vocal band landed the second-ever champion on the Billboard Global 200 last October when their smash "Dynamite" wasted no time going right to No. 1. That track dipped away from the peak position after one turn in first place, then it returned to the summit for another two stints in a row later that same month. After weeks away from the spotlight, "Dynamite" again hit No. 1 in January, collecting its fourth stay in the penthouse.

In between their first two runs at No. 1 on the Billboard Global 200 with "Dynamite," BTS became the first act to land a second leader on the tally when they joined Jawsh 685 and Jason Derulo on the international behemoth "Savage Love (Laxed – Siren Beat)." That song, which benefited greatly from a remixed version which featured BTS, vaulted to the summit for one spell.

While BTS may have been pushed to second place on the list of musicians who have spent the most time at No. 1 on the Billboard Global 200, they might be able to catch up. Rodrigo's "Drivers License" is likely to continue running the show for some time to come, but BTS stand a good chance at returning to the peak spot whenever they have a new single to promote, as their fans aren't just dedicated, they know how to work the charts and send their favorites to No. 1.

Olivia Rodrigo's 'Drivers License' Tops Adult Pop Airplay Chart | Billboard

Olivia Rodrigo accelerates to the top of another Billboard chart, as her breakthrough smash "Drivers License" rises to No. 1 on  Adult Pop Airplay  (dated March 27).

The track, released on Geffen/Interscope Records, spends a fourth week at No. 1 on Pop Airplay and a second week atop the all-genre Radio Songs chart, with 72.3 million audience impressions in the week ending March 21, according to MRC Data.

The song soared in at No. 1 on the Jan. 23-dated all-genre, airplay-, sales- and streaming-based Billboard Hot 100 , where it ruled for eight weeks. It has also topped Streaming Songs and Digital Song Sales and both the Billboard Global 200 and Global Excl. U.S. charts, leading the latter two lists for eight and nine weeks, respectively, the longest reigns since the surveys launched last September.

Reaching the Adult Pop Airplay summit in its 10th week, "License" hits No. 1 more quickly than any other female artist's first entry as a lead act since Leona Lewis' "Bleeding Love" (eight weeks, 2008).

Among acts' first Radio Songs entries in lead roles, "License" wrapped the fastest run to No. 1 (eight weeks) since Meghan Trainor's "All About That Bass" (seven, 2014). On Pop Airplay, it completed the quickest coronation (seven weeks) for lead female in a first chart visit since Blu Cantrell's "Hit 'Em Up Style (Oops!)" (also seven, 2001).

"It's wonderful when you have the opportunity to go to radio with a song that has passion from millions of people," Interscope Geffen A&M president of promotion Brenda Romano recently told Billboard . "Radio loved the song and wanted to jump in and be a part of Olivia's story from the beginning, and they are, in a very big way."

Is Olivia Rodrigo Teasing New Music After Wiping Her Instagram Posts? | Entertainment Tonight

The High School Musical: The Musical: The Series star had fans in a fury after wiping her Instagram clean on Friday. Instead of her snaps, Rodrigo, 18, simply left behind one cryptic video that showed an old TV with a clip of an ice cream cone melting being played and then rewound.

The video has no audio or caption, but fans quickly took to the comments section to speculate that Rodrigo has new music coming out.

"ITS OLIVIAS REPUTATION ERA," another fan commented. The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina star Kiernan Shipka even got in on the action, writing, "I’ve never been excited about a melting ice cream cone before but now I am????"

Rodrigo released her debut single "Drivers License" in January, which has since become a mega hit. The song reached No. 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100, making the actress and singer the youngest artist ever to debut atop the chart.

"I was absolutely floored. I was screaming," she told RADIO.COM of seeing the sketch for the first time. "I think being made fun of and parodied on SNL is the biggest compliment in the whole world, so that was so surreal."

"Never in my wildest dreams did I think that they were going to do a 'Drivers License' sketch where they played the entirety of 'Drivers License,'" she said. "And Pete Davidson, who is my biggest celebrity crush, was singing it and comparing me to Taylor Swift , who is my idol. It was just insane. It was on my 18th birthday too, so it was just a crazy day."

Additionally, Rodrigo is gearing up for the second season of HSMTMTS, which will arrive in less than two months.

"I am excited for the fans to see season 2 of the show because I think they will get to see our characters' growth and trajectory in a deeper way," Rodrigo told ET . "I also can't wait for them to hear this really special song I wrote for an episode."

Olivia Rodrigo and Morgan Wallen Dominate the Charts After Eight Weeks - The New York Times

In late 1966, Elektra Records signed a new band called the Doors, and the label had a feeling its debut was special. To prevent the album from getting lost in the crowded fourth-quarter market, Elektra released it at the start of the next year , when it faced scant competition. "The Doors" became a sensation, eventually reaching No. 2 on the Billboard chart.

The strategy of rolling out a hot album in the January doldrums proved lucrative once again this year with "Dangerous: The Double Album" by Morgan Wallen, a country singer-songwriter who rode a lot of buzz to an instant No. 1 .

But the charts have rarely been as static as they have been this year, as big stars have largely held off releasing new material. That helped Wallen hold at No. 1 for eight weeks now — even as he came under fire last month for using a racial slur — and also given an advantage to Olivia Rodrigo, an 18-year-old singer and actress, who has now dominated the singles chart for eight weeks with her song " Drivers License ."

"Dangerous," which has held strong streaming numbers since it was released, had the equivalent of 82,000 sales in the United States last week, including 103 million streams and 6,000 copies sold as a complete package, according to MRC Data, Billboard's tracking arm. With few major challengers, "Dangerous" may hold at No. 1 for a ninth week, although competition is coming from Justin Bieber and Drake.

"Drivers License," which had nearly 20 million streams last week, may not hold the top spot much longer, after the long-awaited release of three new Drake songs on " Scary Hours 2 ."

The rest of this week's album chart is dominated by other recent hits, most of which have hovered in the Top 10 for weeks if not months: The Weeknd's hits compilation "The Highlights" (No. 2), Pop Smoke's "Shoot for the Stars Aim for the Moon" (No. 3), Pooh Shiesty's "Shiesty Season" (No. 4) and Lil Durk's "The Voice" (No. 5).

Meet Dan Nigro, the LIer behind Olivia Rodrigo's smash 'Drivers License' | Newsday

How does a songwriter find out he has a hit? For Long Island native Dan Nigro, co-writer and producer of Olivia Rodrigo's ubiquitous debut single "Drivers License," he didn't hear it playing in a supermarket or blasting from a passing car. He just checked his phone.

"The way the music industry has changed in the last few years is so weird," said Nigro. His big "That's my song!" moment came in January when Spotify announced that "Drivers License" had been streamed 15 million times in one day, a record for a non-holiday song, causing Nigro's phone to light up with messages. The song broke that record again two days later, then broke yet another record, for most streams in a single week.

"I'm getting texts and calls from my friends at the record label and from Olivia," Nigro recalled, "and we're all just talking and going, 'What the hell is going on?'"

A minimalist ballad built around a rainy-day piano and crying-in-the-car lyrics, "Drivers License" went to No. 1 in the U.S. (staying at the top of the Billboard Hot 100s for eight weeks), the U.K. and other territories and has been certified double platinum, all of which has made Rodrigo, a Disney Channel actress, a pop sensation. As for Nigro, he's happy to cede the spotlight. After years spent fronting a modestly successful rock band during Long Island's emo boom in the 2000s, Nigro lost his love of the stage and began pursuing a career behind the scenes. Now he's a writer-producer who picks and chooses his artists and works out of his home studio in Los Angeles' hip Highland Park neighborhood.

Nigro, 38, was raised in Massapequa Park and formed his musical taste during the late 1990s and early 2000s. One of his first loves was Nirvana; in grade school he and some friends made a lip-sync music video to the band's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" while running around East Farmingdale's Adventureland amusement park. He also developed a wide-ranging ear that took in Bjork, No Doubt, Elbow and Radiohead.

Newsday covers the stories that matter most to Long Islanders. We dig deep to uncover the facts, hold the powerful in check and keep a watchful eye on Long Island.

The mid-2000s was a great time to be an emo band on Long Island. Local heroes Brand New, also signed to Triple Crown, scored a hit with their 2003 album "Deja Entendu," which eventually went gold. Another local band, Taking Back Sunday, was speeding toward commercial success with a pair of hit albums, 2002's "Tell All Your Friends" and 2005's "Where You Want to Be," which debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard album chart.

For As Tall as Lions, there was one problem: They didn't want to be an emo band. Nigro was a crooner, not a screamer, and his songs tended toward dreamy ballads rather than cathartic blowouts. (Listen to the Lions' "Love, Love, Love," a swooning track from 2006, and you may hear a foreshadowing of "Drivers License.")
