Top Tourism Sites Copy Tricks From Video Games to Woo Visitors – Skift

Can tourist destinations tap the mechanics that make computer games so compelling to hook visitors on learning culturally and historically relevant information? That’s a question posed by some recent projects by Med Gaims and Questo.

The so-called “gamification of experiential tourism” aims to add to the travel experience some elements that software developers use to make video games and mobile apps engrossing. The goal is to broaden the appeal of historical sights to today’s digitally immersed travelers by fusing the virtual and real worlds. While the Last Frontier is no stranger to being featured in movies and TV shows, appearances in video games are rare. Alaska provided a setting for 2008′s critically acclaimed post-apocalyptic simulator "Fallout 3," and served as the backdrop of 2014′s Inupiat-inspired "Never Alone."

Much of the fervid discussion around Luster has focused on Leilani's astute and witty analysis of sexual politics and racial power structures in the 21st-century US. But a key part of her acutely realised portrayal of a millennial protagonist coping with crappy jobs and crappier love affairs is Edie's natural relationship with digital culture and technology.

Many readers will recognise that communal experience. RPGs are almost always single-player games, but a lot of us play with friends, shouting instructions to the person holding the controller. "I grew up playing them in a room full of my cousins and friends," says Leilani, "and we identified with different characters in the party.
