As excited as most gamers are about each new generation of video games consoles, one of the first questions to crop up is inevitably "will the new system play my old games?" Unsurprisingly, most consumers don't seem to enjoy filling their entire TV stand with legacy hardware. Ideally, the more games you can play on one system, the better.
Sony struck gold with its initial backward compatibility strategy, but they've taken a more blasé approach to the matter in recent years. The company is being noncommittal about which old games will run on the forthcoming PlayStation 5, and to make matters more complicated, on Monday it was announced that PlayStation 4 controllers will not work for PlayStation 5 games.

Fortnite creator Epic Games is now valued at $17.3 billion
Epic Games, the video game giant behind the hit title Fortnite, said Thursday that it was valued at $17.3 billion after a $1.78 billion funding deal.
The Cary, North Carolina-based firm said the investment came in the form of primary capital and secondary purchases, meaning some investors bought new shares while others bought stakes from existing shareholders. Epic said the investment included a $250 million strategic investment from Sony , which it announced last month .

Nintendo's profit multiplied more than sixfold between April and June as people stuck at home during the pandemic turned to playing video games.
The Japanese manufacturer of Pokemon and Super Mario games, as well as the Switch console, on Thursday reported earnings of $1 billion (106.4 billion yen) in the fiscal first quarter, up from 16.6 billion yen in the year-ago period. Quarterly sales at Kyoto-based Nintendo doubled to $3.4 billion.
Especially popular was "Animal Crossing: New Horizons," of which 10 million were sold during the three months, reaching cumulative sales of 20 million. Also popular was "Mario Kart 8 Deluxe."
Video games: Intellivision Amico console delayed until April 2021
The latest repercussion from the coronavirus pandemic ? A delay in the arrival of the rebooted Intellivision video game console .
The Intellivision Amico, the modern reboot of the iconic Intellivision video game console, which had been scheduled to hit the market Oct. 10, now is scheduled for release April 15, 2021.
Because of production challenges during the pandemic, the company decided to push back the system's launch. Not to do so would have compromised quality assurance, said Intellivision Entertainment CEO Tommy Tallarico during an online event Wednesday. "Ultimately our date is going to be determined by specific quality criteria that the team has defined and not a moment before," he said.

Canadian-based esports organization Enthusiast Gaming announced today it acquired Los Angeles-based Omnia Media, producer of hundreds of YouTube gamer channels including Sidemen's, and media broker for gaming influencers including Shroud, Pokimane and MrBeast, for $38 million (approximately CDN $50 million) in cash and stock.

Sony's profit up as people staying home play video games
TOKYO (AP) — Japanese electronics and entertainment company Sony Corp. said Tuesday that its April-June profit jumped 53% as its video game and other online businesses thrived with people staying home due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Tokyo-based Sony reported a 233 billion yen ($2.2 billion) profit for the last quarter, up from 152 billion yen the year before.
Consumer demand for electronics products has also plunged, including sales of digital cameras, TVs and other gadgets, according to Sony.
