If you squint, your Outer Worlds ship looks a bit like Serenity. If you notice your hold filling up with 'wooly cows', that's surely a reference to a Firefly scene that shows Serenity's hold full of cows about to be rustled to another planet.

In interviews Obsidian developers have named Futurama as an influence. It's another show about an unlikely band of friends (well, sort of friends) who barrel from planet to planet getting into scrapes. I mostly felt this influence in the tone of many of The Outer World's exchanges, but when one of your companions shouts "to shreds, you say" in combat, that must be a callout to a Professor Farnsworth quote from season 1.

Quite a lot has been going on:

The weird, the wacky, the underappreciated: A new look at science fiction and fantasy - The

Even 10 years ago, the fields of science fiction and fantasy were still overwhelmingly American and white. And, if you grew up speaking Spanish in Mexico City, (as I, Silvia, did), or Hebrew on a small kibbutz in Israel (as I, Lavie, did), it meant that the world of science fiction, filtered through translation, was as remote and alien as the other side of the moon. The very idea we could be writing novels like these seemed, well, fantastical.

Yet, somehow, here we are. The past decade has seen the science-fiction world change as more international voices enthusiastically jumped into the fray. Now, wonderful writers including Malaysian Zen Cho can write smart, funny fantasies such as "Sorcerer to the Crown"; after years of struggle, Nigerian Tade Thompson's ambitious Africa-set novel, "Rosewater," was published to wide acclaim and recently won the prestigious Arthur C. Clarke Award; and Chinese author Liu Cixin's "The Three-Body Problem," translated by Ken Liu, has become a bestseller and even has a recommendation from former president Barack Obama.

A Decade in Review: Science Fiction | Arts | The Harvard Crimson

As the 2010s come to a close, the "Decade in Review" series will seek to unravel the best 10 best films from the 10 biggest genres of the decade. Now that every notable wide release science fiction film has been released, science fiction will serve as the first entry in the 10-part series. From $300 million budget box office behemoths to meticulously constructed auteur masterpieces, science fiction has certainly provided some of the widest ranges of films to pick from. Note that this particular ranking does not include superhero films, which often overlap with science fiction, since they have grown into a genre in and of themselves.

Every frame of "Gravity" conveys the most realistic depiction of space committed to film. Cuarón transforms "Gravity" into an unforgettably ethereal adventure with groundbreaking visual effects and gorgeous cinematography that immerses the audience in the hostile vacuum of space. Adding Sandra Bullock's commanding lead performance to the mix leaves one with a powerful experience, even if it lacks the narrative heft of Cuarón's other films.
